I think he is a very intellectually dishonest person, although admittedly smart. I think he is basically a narcissist, but not necessarily in the clinical sense--probably not. But an egotistical person, yes. It's all about him. Others, like Sam Harris or whoever, are doing this because they want to contribute to an intellectual conversation in the world and change people's minds in a good way so there will be less violence etc. WLC, I think, does it because he wants to look both smarter than everyone else and morally superior. It's probably the sort of trick he has always been able to pull off. He gets off on shutting people down in this way. And you can hear it in the paternal and condescending way he talks. Christianity is a good way for him to get at the moral high ground. It is that sort of tool for a lot of people. He is just one of the few that is good at arguing.
As for his actual arguments, they are pure obscurantism and mental gymnastics.
I think it's kinda like what someone, I forget who, said, "William Lane Craig is irrelevant". I used to think, "why haven't more Christians started using his arguments, since they are the most 'sophisticated'?" Well, that's not why most Christians are Christians. They aren't in it for sophistication.

I'll put it another way. I try my damnedest not to think of William Lane Craig.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

At the very least, he is demonstrably intellectually dishonest.
Everyone of his debate points where he uses physics have been shot down, by the physicists he quotes, yet he continues to use them.
In one of his debates with, Sean Pete Carroll (a physicist), WLC uses one of these tactics and quotes another physicist. As a rebuttal, Carroll wheels out a monitor with a vid of the physicist WLC quotes saying the WLC completely misunderstands physics.
But most of all, WLC admits that no amount of evidence will ever get him to change his beliefs because, "the inner witness of the holy spirit" takes priority over, you know... actual demonstrable evidence.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
