RE: Ask an atheistforums.org admin
What is the process of choosing a new mod?
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Yahoo, Google, and Baidu (a Chinese SE) have web crawlers that keep their search engines up to date. If you copy/paste some unique-ish text from someone's post into Google, it will show up in the suggestions after a relatively short amount of time.

Those are web crawlers used by Yahoo and Google to index web pages for their search engines. They aren't regular members so they don't have accounts, but they are identifiable by a string they send to the server.

We usually make a thread where people nominate candidates, then we create a poll and the current staff votes. The person with the highest amount of votes is asked to join.

That's a shame because one day I would love to join the staff but I think it should be based on more than just a popularity vote.

It's not really a vote of who we like best. It is a vote of who we think fits all the criteria of being a mod best. Sometimes those are two very different things, oftentimes they coincide.
