Putin Orders Russian Withdrawal From Syria
Look.  A politician who knows how not to get himself stuck in a quagmire!

It's nice to not have an opposition party ready to accuse you of cowardice at such a decision.

His central bank officials probably managed to get it through his thick head that russia literally cannot afford his jingoism, and got him to pull out before the army shot its last bullet.

I wonder what concession he extracted for retiring from Syria.   Most likely western acquiescence of Assad's continued tenure as president of Syria and the counterparty in any peace talks.   I don't think a mainly air campaign of moderate scale would be too expensive even for Russia to sustain.

Remember the American position had been that Assad had to go before any peace negotiation, i.e. Syrian life is a small price to pay for getting rid of a regime that had been friendly to the US but not friendly enough to be a willing pawn in a geostrategic game to checkmate Russia.

That may sound odd, but Putin was the only one acting from a purely Western perspective. Assad is the only known secular power there. Everything else is a big fat unknown.

Putin withdrawing means he feels safe enough to set that step. Syria provides the only base for the Russian navy in the region. If there hadn't been something going on behind the curtains, he never would have withdrawn.

I agree.  Regime change has been a colossal failure.  If those fuckers don't have a dictator they appoint some mullah to tell them what to do.  Fuck that.  Give me the dictator anytime.
