Interesting character, Albert Pike.

He also wrote these lyrics to Dixie as a kind of Southern battle song.

Quote:Southrons, hear your country call you,
Up, lest worse than death befall you!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Lo! all the beacon-fires are lighted,--
Let all hearts be now united!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Advance the flag of Dixie! Hurrah! Hurrah!
In Dixie's land we take our stand, and live or die for Dixie!
To arms! To arms! And conquer peace for Dixie!
To arms! To arms! And conquer peace for Dixie

Hear the Northern thunders mutter!
Northern flags in South winds flutter!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Send them back your fierce defiance!
Stamp upon the cursed alliance!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus:
Fear no danger! Shun no labor!
Lift up rifle, pike, and saber!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Shoulder pressing close to shoulder,
Let the odds make each heart bolder!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

How the South's great heart rejoices
At your cannon's ringing voices!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
For faith betrayed and pledges broken,
Wrongs inflicted, insults spoken,
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

Strong as lions, swift as eagles,
Back to their kennels hunt these beagles!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Cut the unequal bonds asunder!
Let them hence each other plunder!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

Swear upon your country's altar
Never to submit or falter--
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Till the spoilers are defeated,
Till the Lord's work is completed!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

Halt not till our Federation
Secures among earth's powers its station!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Then at peace and crowned with glory,
Hear your children tell the story!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

If the loved ones weep in sadness,
Victory soon shall bring them gladness--
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Exultant pride soon vanish sorrow;
Smiles chase tears away to-morrow!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

Not bad considering he was born in Boston!

Many Christians think that the US was founded as a christian nation, yet, do they know of, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington? Which were the founding fathers, which weren't believers of Christianity according to the evidence of their lives.

Presumably, this is meant to be like the Niacene Creed in reverse. Well, how about an atheist version of the Lord's prayer?

Our Father,
Who sure as hell art not in heaven,
Vishnu, Thor, Allah, Jehovah, Zeus, Ra or Buddha be thy name?
Thy secular democracy come;
Thy will be done,
In front of witnesses, before Nietzsche finds thee dead.
Give us today something a bit better than bread, thou stingy bastard,
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we chase with a shotgun those who trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
(Though it'd be fun every now and then),
And deliver us from the evil thou created, in thy mercy.
For thine be the secular democracy,
The Inconsistent Triad, and the glory,
Until entropic heat death,
A-non-gender-specific-noun.
'We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.' H.L. Mencken

'False religion' is the ultimate tautology.

'It is just like man's vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions.' Mark Twain

'I care not much for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it.' Abraham Lincoln

I am sure most of you have seen the "What if you're wrong?" Richard Dawkins video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mmskXXetcg

It's similar to the response Min posted.

What if you're wrong about the great Juju at the bottom of the sea? Big Grin

I am not sure if this has been posted in this forum before, but some time ago I came across this very insightful article by Robert Green Ingersoll:

http://www.infidels.org/library/historic...ostic.html

This is an excerpt of the first few paragraphs. It is a very interesting read indeed. Though he claims to be agnostic. Most of his views are very similar to mine and many atheists.

For the most part we inherit our opinions. We are the heirs of
habits and mental customs. Our beliefs, like the fashion of our
garments, depend on where we were born. We are molded and fashioned
by our surroundings.

Environment is a sculptor -- a painter.

If we had been born in Constantinople, the most of us would
have said: "There is no God but Allah, and Mohammed is his
prophet." If our parents had lived on the banks of the Ganges, we
would have been worshipers of Siva, longing for the heaven of
Nirvana.

As a rule, children love their parents, believe what they
teach, and take great pride in saying that the religion of mother
is good enough for them.

Most people love peace. They do not like to differ with their
neighbors. They like company. They are social. They enjoy traveling
on the highway with the multitude. They hate to walk alone.

The Scotch are Calvinists because their fathers were. The
Irish are Catholics because their fathers were. The English are
Episcopalians because their fathers were, and the Americans are
divided in a hundred sects because their fathers were. This is the
general rule, to which there are many exceptions. Children
sometimes are superior to their parents, modify their ideas, change
their customs, and arrive at different conclusions. But this is
generally so gradual that the departure is scarcely noticed, and
those who change usually insist that they are still following the
fathers.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

I'm quite certain that some of them do know about Thomas Jefferson - which is why those in the Texas School Board have decided to "tone down" exactly what role he had in American History. Perhaps they just couldn't find enough misjudged quotes to link him to being a "Christian Founding Father." Pricks.
