RE: Scientology
I knew when I opened this thread that it would descend into funny. You just can't talk about scientology without someone making fun of it.

On a side note, I think an H.G. Wells religion would be far better than scientology. That's just me.

That's cause HG Wells was an infinitely better writer than L. Ron Hubbard could ever hope to match.

Exactly. We should start an H.G. Wells religion. Who wants to be a Morlock?

I prefer a hybrid - intellect of Morlock, better appearence closer to that of an Eloi.

I already have enough Morlock habits - hell, I am inside my dark cave of solitude being part of the New World Order and the Atheist Conspiracy.

RE: Scientology
Not entirely sure it's appropriate to have a thread about Scientology in the Religion section. My perception is that Scientology is a criminal organisation. Oh,wait,Oh poo, I've done gone and gotten all confused again.

I've always been fascinated by the religion of Mars,as outlined by Edgar Rice Burroughs ' The Gods Of Mars'

Probably out of print now,but I enjoyed it hugely in 1966. Times were simpler and more innocent,as indeed was IBig Grin

Quote:Plot introduction

At the end of the first book, A Princess of Mars, John Carter is unwillingly transported back to Earth. The Gods of Mars begins with his arrival back on Barsoom (Mars) after a ten year hiatus, separated from his wife Dejah Thoris, his unborn child, and the Red Martian people of the nation of Helium, whom he has adopted as his own. Unfortunately, Carter materializes in the one place on Barsoom from which nobody is allowed to depart: the Valley Dor, which is the Barsoomian afterlife.
[edit]Plot summary

After his advent, a boat of Green Martians arrive on the River Iss, and is ambushed by the previously unknown Plant Men. Carter comes to their aid. The lone survivor is his good friend Tars Tarkas, the Jeddak of Thark, who has taken the pilgrimage to the Valley Dor to find Carter.
Carter and Tarkas discover that the Therns, rulers of Valley Dor, a white-skinned race of self-proclaimed gods, have for eons deceived the Barsoomians of the outer world by disseminating the myth that the pilgrimage to the Valley Dor is a journey to paradise. Most, however, are killed by the beasts of Valley, the survivors enslaved by Therns.
