State Dept.: 75-year wait for FOIA request not 'outlandish'

According to CNN, the State Department said getting all the emails together from each official would take at least 16 years each, and in some cases, 33 years. State's filing indicated that it would only be able to find the emails sequentially, not concurrently, because of the backlog of FOIA requests.

"Given the Department's current FOIA workload and the complexity of these documents, it can process about 500 pages a month, meaning it would take approximately 16-and-2/3 years to complete the review of the Mills documents, 33-and-1/3 years to finish the review of the Sullivan documents, and 25 years to wrap up the review of the Kennedy documents — or 75 years in total," the department argued.

Maybe the republicunts will increase their budget so they can fill these requests more rapidly?

The way it really works is that the agency budgets a certain number of FTEs (Full-Time Equivalents) to specific tasks.  This way they can get two part-timers to each work half of the year if need be and still just be one FTE.  So they know in advance how many pages each worker can review for FOIA purposes.  The irony here is that it is congress which determines the agency budget in the first place.  Even if they attached a provision to the agency budget directing an increase in the number of people working FOIA cases it would still take time to hire and train those people and - here is the real kicker - they would have to be trained by the people who are now doing the job.  So that 75 year estimate goes out the window because until the new hires were up to speed there would be fewer people doing the job. 

I, as a former government worker, am amused when congress gets pulled over by the weight of their own balls.

These are State Department emails...from 4+ years ago.  If the fucking republicunts want to go fishing they are going to have to wait for a while!
