Jupiter, meet Juno

Jupiter, meet Juno
The cool Juno mission is due to arrive in Orbit around Jupiter later today! It will measure Jupiters magnetic field among other things to learn more about the processes going on inside.

It also carries a hi-def camera which will be operated partly by amateur astronomers, and which will be active for a few orbits before it gets killed by the radiation.

It'd be cool to get more detailed data on the polar aurora/lightning storms Hubble picked up.

The camera is kinda sore subject to me.

You're correct, the radiation is expected to fry it pretty fast, and while it is digital and the imaging sensor is top notch, the lens on the camera is very wide angle, like nearly 60 degrees.

For those of us brought up with the Voyager NA camera with a field of view under 0.5 degrees (a pretty darn good telephoto lens!) this super wide angle camera on Juno is going to yield a very different kind of view than I'd really like to see from Jupiter. There won't be pics of the fascinating satellites with any kind of resolution at all.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

Success, apparently.

Quote:“Welcome to jupiter”
“Welcome to jupiter,” a voice said over the radio at Nasa’s JPL, with scientists cheering, clapping and hugging each other.
The burn time was within one second of the predicted time, putting it in exactly the orbit it needed.
“You’re the best team ever! We just did the hardest thing Nasa has ever done,” shouted, principle investigator of the Juno mission, Scott Bolton.

Juno successfully enters orbit around Jupiter!
Cheers have erupted in the Nasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory control room as researchers hear a simple tone, revealing Juno’s main engine has switched off, and the spacecraft is in the planned orbit.
As far as we know now, Juno has completed one of the riskiest and most important parts of its very long mission!
Stay tuned for details and updates as they come in.
Now Juno will need to re-orient itself, so that it faces back towards the sun and collects the solar power it needs to continue on its mission.

I wonder what my dad would have thought about this. Some of you may recall that I mentioned my father worked on the Apollo missions back in the 60's up until his Aneurysm in 1970. He was an Aerospace Engineer, the fancy term for a rocket scientist Smile
