Now that's a blast from the past...
Did they really make "rücksichtslosen Gebrauch" of weapons, indiscriminately shooting people? Seems like a slight exaggeration, but you know their history better than me...

No, they didn't. They shot when they were cornered and targeted what they thought to be the establishment. And US army bases. But I do remember being afraid of them sometimes, being a child and all.
The ones being in custody at Stammheim were even against the hijacking of the Landshut in '77 because it put civilians in danger. They had their skewed code of honor and considered themselves an army.

My first reaction was also the IRA, probably because I am a Brit. And had to google RAF 'cause I thought you meant the Royal Air Force.

Not really, Stimbo. The term terrorist is always a child of it's time, it's region and published opinion. Now, people tend to think muslim first in most of the western world.
