#2 really does trust me (Stockholm syndrome, undoubtedly) but I hate to burn up all my accrued respect and good will on a bunch of effing cat ear drops.

And yes, as Homer Simpson noted in an infamous episode oh so many years ago, you have to keep the ear medicine in the fridge.

The worst part for them after rubbing the ear drops in I've noticed is that it quickly gets to their throat and I don't think it's pineapple flavoured!

This cat has some odd taste cravings.

He likes Lays barbecue tater chips. He'll eat plain Ruffles too.

He probably won't like ear drops though.

Yep.  You can do almost anything to my beagle, including dragging him into the bathtub, and he's unlikely to react in a negative way.  You start sticking things in his ears though (I guess you have to clean them out as well as adding drops, right?), and he will fight like the devil to get away from you.
