This is a real game changer. New technology always comes as a two-edged sword, great opportunity for new industries while rendering old industries obsolete if they don’t roll with the punches.

1. Oil companies will have to totally tear down and rebuild their facilities.
2. Companies that manufacture oil drilling equipment will have a lot of unmarketable products.
3. Gas stations will have no customers

These companies can survive with a great deal of creativity and money. But since the fossil fuel industry has tended to lean to the conservative right, I don’t see them going with the flow of new technology. I see them fighting it as an enemy. They will lose in the end just as daguerreotype lost to Kodak.

There are other primates poised to evolve to fill our position, it would take a few million years, and the planet would sort itself back to 'normal' in a similar time scale
