In February 1778, Voltaire returned for the first time in 20 years to Paris, among other reasons to see the opening of his latest tragedy, Irene. The 5-day journey was too much for the 83-year old, and he believed he was about to die on February 28, writing "I die adoring God, loving my friends, not hating my enemies, and detesting superstition." However, he recovered, and in March saw a performance of Irene where he was treated by the audience as a returning hero. However, he soon became ill again and died on May 30, 1778. When asked on his deathbed by a priest to renounce the devil and turn to God, he is alleged to have replied, "For God's sake, let me die in peace."

lolol

Excellent! This makes me think of arguments I've had with believers. I've often been told that if you accept "Jesus" as your savior you are guaranteed to go to "heaven" when you die. I've countered with, "So, if Hitler truly accepted "Jesus" just before he died, Hitler would have been welcomed into heaven?" Almost every time I ask this, the answer is "I think so." I then ask "So a man can be selfless and spend his entire life helping others, he can give blood regularly, he can volunteer to entertain children at the local hospital, he can donate most of his money to charity, he can provide shelter to the homeless.... and all this means nothing because he will spend eternity in a firepit if he does not "accept Jesus"? The answer I typically get is "I don't make the rules, but I'd say yes."

How can anyone believe this tripe?

No, Min, never beats around the bush..short, blunt and sweet....LOOLOL

Thor, that is too funny, I've had the same arguments with the herds in my area.

My wife's father committed suicide when she was only 8 years old. When she was growing up, she had preachers and their flocks tell her that he was burning in hell for taking his own life. If there is any one thing that got her to questioning religion (Xtianity) that was by far the start..

For me it was the something close to what you questioned on Hitler and everyday common descent people who had a different belief than a Xtian, or non-belief...

Of course the more "laxed" xtians will usually reply with it's god, who knows, etc. etc. etc.

One of the things that bugs me about religion is the scare tactics they use. I recall seeing something that was used at one of those "Bible Camps". It was an audio presentation where you were supposed to imagine this friend of yours had died. You heard the friend's voice screaming out about how he was getting tortured and thrown into a lake of fire. The entire time he was screaming "Why didn't you tell me about Jesus? You knew about Jesus and you never told me! They're throwing me into a lake of fire! Why didn't you tell me? You could have saved me!" etc.... This went on for a good ten minutes. The whole thing was designed to get the kiddies to tell their friends about Jesus!

Can you believe it? The message is that your friends who are not Christians will be thrown into a lake of fire unless you tell them about Jesus! And if they end up in this lake of fire because you didn't tell them about Jesus... IT'S YOUR FAULT!

Absolutely despicable. And I'm supposed to "respect" religious beliefs like this?

And the idiots say that religion is not "Child Abuse"....

Bible camp, Jesus Camp, (all the above) are one in the same...It's to mind fuck children into a fearful life of following the same pathetic belief as their parents...

I have raised all my children to "Question" everything and be as rational about life and their paths as can be....

Speaking of child abuse camps... Have you seen anything on "Hell House"...? Now that's a mind fuck for kids....

I agree. I would definitely call it "child abuse". Imagine if you told your little kids scary stories and you said that if they tried to leave their bed before dawn they would get taken away by a monster! Other people would think that you were a horrible parent to scare your kids like that. But these same idiots don't think twice about sending their kids off to "Jesus Camp" where they'll have the bejeebers scared out of them. Just sickening.

I've seen some of the "Hell House" stuff on Youtube. This is nothing more than brainwashing and indoctrination. Anyone who sends a little kid in to experience that crap should be beaten about the head. When I was little I wasn't allowed to go into the "House of Horrors" at the amusement park. But people willingly (even gladly) send their kid into something called "Hell House" which, from what I can tell, is a hundred times scarier than anything in an amusement park. How twisted are these people?

That's funny, I had thought the same thing about what you said on this quote many years ago:

Quote:But people willingly (even gladly) send their kid into something called "Hell House" which, from what I can tell, is a hundred times scarier than anything in an amusement park. How twisted are these people?

a few many years back, I asked a Preacher that I knew, why in the hell would he send his congregation and children on a van ride to this bullshit, but preach against haunted houses???

No shit, this was his reply back, "Because haunted houses are not real, and Hell House is, and what awaits gods children if they stray from god's path"....

Yes, I know that not all preachers are like this and believe this way etc. etc.....But the point is missed on so many levels.....

The point is, is that there are............

Oh, so "Hell House" is real, huh? And he knows this for a fact? How?

This is one of the things that really annoys me about believers. They are so certain that the bullshit they believe is true that they spout it as undeniable fact. They KNOW that "God" exists! They KNOW that the Bible is true! They KNOW that "God" created the universe! They KNOW that Jesus will return!

I wish I could bet them that what they believe is crap. I could be a very rich person!

This reminds me of a wake I went to where the priest told us we had to pray for the deceased because "God" uses our prayers in his decision as to whether or not the deceased gets into heaven! I REALLY wanted to speak up. I wanted to ask how he could POSSIBLY know such a thing. I also wanted to ask what happens if a good person dies and no one prays for him. Does "God" say, "Gee, I see no one is praying for you. See ya!"? And what if an entire nation prayed for a despicable person? If all of Germany prayed for Hitler after he died, would "God" have said, "Wow! Millions of people are praying for you! Come right in!"? Of course, I kept silent, but this is the kind of thing that gets under my skin.
