So UFO's and aliens... what's the deal?

An Unedentified Flying Object is just that. From there to jump to aliens is simply an appeal to ignorance. "Oh we saw this odd thing in the sky, therefore aliens". If there is an UFO, best way to identify it is getting more data.

I recall a joke about a literature class at uni where a student fell asleep. The professor called his name twice, the student went on snoring. Frustrated, the professor took the copy of 'The Canterbury Tales' he was referencing and whipped it with freakish accuracy across the room, hitting the student square on the head. Roused, the student said, 'What the HELL was that??'

The professor replied calmly, 'That, young man, was a flying Chaucer.'

Which, I reckon, is about as close as we're ever likely to get to alien visitation.

The Fermi Paradox has problems. First, no hard numbers to plug in. Second, why would aliens come here? (The most common answer involves a lot of self-importance on our part that can't be justified.)  Third, even if they came here there's no reason to believe they'd HAVE TO contact us. (You trekkies know what I mean.)

Used to be you could put up a smudgy picture and claim it was a real UFO you saw with your own two eyes. As mentioned above, that doesn't work these days.

An for the state of belief, one of the recent heads of MUFON quit a while back, citing absolutely no evidence to support any flying saucer sighting claims.

The distance between earth and alpha centauri is over 4 light years. 100 million miles an hour for 20 years. An intelligent being able to achieve this travel feat is not likely to pop in , talk to rednecks, dissect stinky dead cows, then jet back home to tell everyone the news. "Hey Ya'll ! They hate queers too!"
Why are aliens always simian in build? Even when they have lizard heads they have simian bodies.

Zefram Cochrane hasn't been born yet, so sadly, no aliens to date.

Let me just say that I've also seen lights in the sky moving very erratically. Aliens are the least likely of explanations.

Oh yeah UFOs. I kind of trace that to the era of TV (unlike personalized era today) when I would watch something and then stumble on some UFO documentary about all these cases, like she saw that, they were visited, pilots encountered... I mean there was even claim by an astronaut Gordon Cooper that he was in the desert for some army reason when flying saucer landed and army took the aliens to some secret place.
I guess person could get caught in it and people do, but let's face it they are all just stories. Actually bit more then stories, they have this tyranny with it that you have to believe in this fantastical worldview of giant conspiracies, because if you don't you're doomed, they're messing with your brain, they're abducting you. Very much like the tyranny of religion.
There really is no evidence. No credible video or photograph or anything else. People do invent stuff or misinterpret. Why? Maybe they just want attention or mostly money, because there really is market for it.

One other thing I noticed is that every so called professional ufologist, that writes books and holds lectures, is always dismissive toward other ufulogist and thinks that only his worldview is right. You know some people are against abductions, some are for it, some claim that most modern tech comes from reversed engineering, some believe aliens are running the governments, some are against it and so on.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
