Back then the mortality rate was much higher and your survival was much more dependent on being loyal to the tribe, and that stems even to prior polytheism. In antiquity most humans lived in tribal local groups lead by a ruling family. Even in polytheism it was a norm to make your captured in war slaves and take their women/girls/children as prizes.

Even in polytheism, most humans falsely attributed their success as a tribe as coming from a divine power. The god that lead to all three religions was originally a lesser god "Yahweh" under the rule of the head god "El" as part of a "divine family".

Even Buddhism does not escape this motif in it's depictions of the first Buddha. He was born of royalty and his mother Queen Maya was told by the divine world of the birth she would give as a gift to humanity.

Once you have sampled all the motifs of the world's religions in human history it becomes obvious as to what humans are doing in reality. They are merely buying into these myths in order to create a sense of self importance.

So, we can go forward 2,000-3,000 years into present day Earth and nothing much has changed. Chinese people feel safer in large communities overseas, just as the English do, the French, and all other groups besides. We have never grown out of the tribal mentality. Shame really.

We wont ever, that is what all life does. But we most certainly can manage our differences better, our western societies when they want to do prove that you can live, literally next to someone with a different background without wanting to murder them. But yea, we are tribal because our species evolved to be social, where we go wrong is placing far too much value on local than we should when it is far more important to understand global history and evolution.

I'm not fatalistic about my species, I see lots of good in us, but I don't ignore our flaws either, and the biggest one we suffer from is our own false perceptions. We have progressed too.

Our universe (probably one of many universes) doesn't care about us - at all. Life is a rare thing and we are very fortunate to be here. So many things in our universe could exterminate life easily. A black hole, a star exploding or asteroid impact to name some things.

Yes, Syria is very sad. But then if you look around, even just Atheistforums.org is a sign of how far humans have come. We no longer need to just survive. We are at the stage where we can afford to do seemingly pointless things as post on websites such as this one. It is testament to the amazing human brain and body.

The gymnast doesn't need to exist but he or she can show many of the amazing feats the human body is capable, and provide good entertainment. The dancer is the same. They had to use their big human brains to come up with the complex moves, and that takes time. But as hominids are so advanced now.

Even in the poorest countries people still manage to find time to do seemingly pointless things. Even in though times people are still able to celebrate occasions (except when al-Saud's Henchmen come along because they everything nice).  The Quran keeps telling us how insignificant humans are:- If you look at the story of Noah you begin to see how meaningless human life is to Allah. I actually thing humans are amazing animals.

Humans are working towards making life far less "tough". We have it easier today than centuries previously. We can beat loads of illnesses. And soon, even MS will be beaten as a few years from now (within your lifetime) we will be able to edit genes in living humans. Genetic engineering will extend human lifespan by decades - maybe even centuries - as we will repair damaged DNA and take the genes from animals that are immune to ageing. Meanwhile, what is Allah doing?

Here you go (good video 16:03, long):

A far more in-depth video for you on CRISPR then the previous one (over an hour long); I think it's pretty cool that living things can "comment out" genetic code (e.g. that of viruses) just like a computer programming language, so that it is not executed:
