I'm curious.  Do other nations spend as much time recalling their defeats?  Do the French memorialize Waterloo every year?  Do the British memorialize the Somme?

Yeah that's the part that I always find odd. We memorialize the day we were attacked, but not the day we won the ensuing war. I mean in this case obviously we didn't actually 'win' the ensuing war. But we had mission accomplished day didn't we? Doesn't that count for something?

Ok seriously. I get that lots of people had friends and relatives that lost their lives during the events of that particular day. I get that. But everyone has lost people at one point or another. So why do the 9/11 people have license to do things like this:

Fuck you.  I knew people who died that day.  And you're nothing more than a piece of shit who wants to look 'brave' for taking a 'controversial' stance.  Well fuck off. 

I mean if someone said they were looking forward to going out and shooting some turkey on February 12th and I freaked out on them and said fuck you you piece of shit, my aunt Helen loved turkeys and she was killed by a meth head on February 12th how can you be so insensitive you fucking fuck yada yada yada.... Well that would be insane. But why is aunt Helen's death any less senseless or painful to remember for those involved?

Back in 2002, the first anniversary, someone on the Fearbush boards of old, brought up the other 9/11. The one happening 28 years earlier in Chile. Got a lot of flak for that. I for one didn't even remember that this was a date, having some symbolic meaning for other nations as well.

What I don't get about this is all the flag waving involved. Obviously there's a lot to mourn. I get as much. But there's not a lot to take national pride in. Neither internally with all the rollbacks on civil rights associated with the Patriot Act and other bills, nor in the ensuing quagmires in Afghanistan and even more so in Iraq.

Many nations remember defeats, by the way. The Japanese always have a memorial the days the bombs fell. Also the Germans have a memorial for Dresden every year. Some 20 years back it was a very touching ceremony. After the wall fell, many survivors and allied bomber pilots were still alive. And they used to gather in the newly rebuilt Frauenkirche to reflect together. The point is, none of these memorials are beacons of national pride, but simple memorials for the horrors of war and lives being lost.

And I think that's a major difference.

Here is my spin, and you can hate me all you want for it.

America the great imposes itself on countries that have been around longer than America, and it is surprised when a retaliation happens due to what we are wrongfully doing to other countries; i.e., those unspeakable acts that cannot be disclosed to the public due to national security.
Therefore, I will forget what happened on 9-11.

It does not make me less American. It actually makes me more of an American for having the gumption to stand up to the government.

9/11 wasn't a "defeat" because it wasn't a battle or even part of a war. It was a tragedy, and is remembered as a tragedy just like many others are. Innocent civilians lost their lives...that's why we remember.

You're right. It doesn't make you less American. It makes you more of a dick. If you honestly think remembering 9/11 is about "government" then I really think you should go back and read what happened that day, because it has nothing to do with war, but more with the fact that so many innocent people lost their lives.

Honestly, even if you disagree with the war that followed, that's no reason not to remember the people who died in it. Do you think people in Germany refuse to remember the dead of World War II because they were Nazis?
