Using SSDs for dual boot systems

Using SSDs for dual boot systems
On my laptop I've got a 256gb SSD and Windows 7, but I am considering adding a partition for a Linux Mint installation. But I'm not sure whether it's a good idea given that it's an SSD. For instance, if there are two partitions, with two OSes, will that affect how the SSD is 'TRIMmed'... eg will it create uneven wear on the drive; will the TRIM feature only trim the partition it is called from or the whole drive? I roughly understand how SSDs work; that there is a separation between the logical and physical storage... that even a static file in the filesystem is being constantly moved around the drive at the physical level, in order to even the wear. But what I'm wondering is whether that logical/physical separation extends to partitions not just file systems? Because if it doesn't, it looks like it would significantly reduce the the lifespan of the drive, if one partition was used significantly more than the other... because the aim of the wear levelling is to ensure that all sectors in the drive fail at roughly the same time, and thus get the maximum use out of the drive, but if the sectors are blocked off as it were in partitions, then a smaller partition would wear quicker while another didn't at all, and the drive would fail quicker. So any advice would be much appreciated Smile

RE: Using SSDs for dual boot systems
As far as I know, SSD's are so fundamentally different in structure and build to hard drives that partitioning doesn't wear it out or shorten the lifespan at all. I could be wrong but that's my best guess based on how they work.
I'll leave it to other more techified people to answer fully Tongue

Thanks iro Smile But I don't want to start trying this until I'm absolutely sure, one way or the other, so I'll hold out for a definitive answer... but thanks for the input anyway Smile

Okay, it looks like this http://superuser.com/questions/808833/di...ing-an-ssd pretty much sums it up. That it's fine... that partitioning makes no difference to the lifespan of an SSD. But just thought I'd ask here first Smile

Well, they are on disability so how long could their life span be to begin with?
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

So many different variations as well. Executor Class, Eclipse Class, Acclamator Class...

.........

Ah fuck, I've done it again haven't I?

I have a rough idea what brewer was talking about but I haven't got a clue what you're talking about hehe Blush They sound like types of spaceships in star trek or something?

Eta: never mind (probably). Are they different types of SSD and you just wanted to add a bit more confusion to the mix? Wink Big Grin if so then good point... I need to find out exactly what type of SSD I have.

They're classes of Super Star Destroyer, from Star Wars Tongue

Only the Executor Class is considered canon now though, since the other two are from the now-defunct Expanded Universe. To my geeky brain, SSD still sometimes means Super Star Destroyer Big Grin
