Why?

In a way we do live in 4 dimensions if you count time. If we lived in 4 physical dimensions then presumably we would still only have one dimension of time.

Purple Rabbit, what do you think of this statement by Polkinghorne (from my article I provided link for earlier):

''One of the fascinating things about the physical world is that its fundamental structure seems always to be expressed in beautiful mathematics. To me that suggests that there is a Mind behind the structure of the world, and that our minds are somehow attuned to that Mind.''

This 'link' with mathematics seems to crop up a lot with other mathematicians/scientists. What are your thoughts on this?

We don't live in 4 dimensions. We live in 3 and move along a 4th in a single direction (time). If we lived in 4 dimensions we'd be able to travel backwards through time in the same way we can travel backwards through space.

4 spatial dimensions doesn't imply anything about the 'direction' of time.

It would take more energy to heat things up though (unrelated kinda, but interesting, I'm taking the QI approach :p )

Unless by 4 dimensions you meant 3 spatial, 1 time. But it doesn't really mean anything to compare the two.

Let's not be pedantic. I know we operate in 3 dimensions. I said 4, in order to take into account 'time'.
