Yabut, will this make cigars cheaper?   Read

LOL, unlikely, since the price of a cigar to you, the american consumer, isn't even remotely related to the cost of production or yields.  Taxes and tariffs baby, taxes and tariffs. You could cut the cost of tobacco production by half or double it's output and they;d probably -increase- the sin tax on account of that. Gotta do -something- to combat the scourge of cheap tobacco products, after all.

Ruminant mammals also have that ability.  We could genetically engineer -ourselves-, if you're looking for something that direct, over and above integrated sugar production.  As soon as we get over the fear of modification, that is, lol.  We could colonize our digestive tracts with a few species of novel bacterium.  We could supplement our diet with targeted enzymes.  I suppose, I'd say that once we're onboard with screwing /w shit, the sky's the limit, lol.  Just a few changes here and there, to ourselves and our crops, and we might find that the earths carrying capacity /w regards to food is effectively limitless.  That we'd run out of everything else before we ever ran out of things to eat.

Yes, over and above integrated sugar production. And not by human modification, in the lab. Convert cellulose to glucose on an industrial scale.
I don't have an anger problem, I have an idiot problem.

RE: Hjacking Photosynthesis
That's already done, though it's largely devoted to fuel production since fuel is more profitable than food, particularly in light of more cost effective ways to produce edible sugar. It's difficult to envision any point in which that won;t be true. If you have a process that can turn cellulose into edible sucrose, by default, it can make go-juice. If it were cost effective (relative to the usual fare) to make the edibles, it would be a -goldmine- outputting fuel. I can't imagine why anyone would waste that on sweeteners.

I was born in that city, or Urbana; they're kinda stuck together so much that a lot of people call the place Champagne Urbana. Nice to see the home of ENIAC is still doing good work.
