Oh, the irony of you, an atheist, arguing that it's fine that a religious holiday can evolve enough that you are allowed to celebrate it but having the terminology evolve to fit the times is ridiculous.  It's almost as funny as as Christians creating a holiday by hijacking another festival and its customs and then throwing a hissy-fit when anyone else dares to propose a change.

I've been in favor of the "two party system" since I found out we could party on Xmas AND New Year's Eve. As Xmas is now about the money I have no problem with it.

I wouldn't be so quick to desire more parties. Maybe 1 or two more at best, but India has literally 100s of political parties and have far more poverty on average.

What we need more than more parties is a government that doesn't act like gang members and does the pragmatic work.

Coincidentally as I was typing that last post in work a girl behind me was saying how much she loves Christmas and a workman came in with a Christmas tree under his arm saying where do you want the Christmas tree.

Makes me glad this work place isn't infected with political correctness that makes this holiday/Christmas thing even an issue.

Perhaps it just sounds stupid to me being from the uk we don't even call it the holidays to begin with.

I thought Americans called it a Christmas tree so it would be stupid to randomly call it holiday tree. That just sounds so bland and corporate.
The designated holiday tree with regulation tinsel.

I'm not having a hissy fit because at least in my surroundings there's no holiday tree or people changing the words to fit some idea of inclusiveness. I work with some Muslims and atheists who love Christmas and some who don't but we all call Christmas trees what they are which is Christmas trees.

Also why are you saying so NOW christmas has nothing to do with Jesus and the bible.  My original position has always been it has nothing to do with Jesus or the bible and this has been agreed upon by pretty much everyone posting.

As long as there's mutual understanding of what people mean when they say either holiday tree or christmas tree I don't really care what people call it.  I think Christmas tree and father Christmas are more catchy titles than holiday tree and father holiday or whatever he's going to be called next.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

It's more about people refusing to call things what they are and using euphemisms in the name of diversity and tolerance. Like the previous poster said it's a Christmas tree, deal with it.

'Christmas tree' is a euphemism for pagan holiday tree.

Sigh.

Actually, it's not.  The holiday you're celebrating with the tree is the winter solstice.  There's nothing in the Bible or the Christian religion that even vaguely suggests (or even makes sense of) using evergreen trees to commemorate the (completely wrong season) birth of Jesus.

The truth is that pagans used to deck out their homes with sprigs and branches to make their homes look alive, so that Death would pass them by in winter.  Or they did it just because it helped them remember that spring was around the corner.  Or because Balder the sun god like evergreen trees.

I think I like that heathen thing. Sounds so interesting, I don't know.  Smile

The so-called 'War on Christmas' seems to be more a seasonal war on non-Christians daring not to conform to the cultural expectations of Christian supremacists. Although I'm sure it happens, I've never seen anyone offended by 'Merry Christmas!'. Offended by 'Happy Holidays!'? I'm just glad I haven't seen it come to blows. Personally. Yet.

Just wait. Trump said that he'd make everyone say "Merry Christmas." I can't wait for that executive order to come out.
Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.
