I stay away from tiny concert venues and night clubs for this reason... all I can think about is the possibility of something like this happening

I didn't gather from the article I read that it was a club, but rather an artist's commune. As such, it wouldn't be subject to high-occupancy exit requirements.

So this is the warehouse fire Lia has been telling me about in Oakland. She got an email from someone on the east coast wanting to be sure it wasn't near us. It wasn't. Plus, while crude we have three real stair cases, four exits and you can bet Lia has a pipe wrench near the gas shut off. She's been nagging me to get the fire extinguishers recharged. Maybe I should.

Our old rat trap is still standing.

Not going to say it,ok, I am going to say it, but as liberal as CA is, you still have individuals who put profit over safety, and this was a direct result of that. You can expect a rightful lawsuit of the owners of and or the organizers of that event, and the property owners who didn't keep it up to code

A rush to the buck is why we have needless crap like this. It is why we have the Volkswagen recall, the Takata airbag recall. Why we have an asshole jacking up the price of aids drugs 700%. It is why we have big oil in denial that burning fossil fuels is killing our planet.

I find the word "tragedy" hollow when we keep repeating it. The same crap when people say about a crime "this was senseless". NO it makes sense, not in the context anyone wants these things to happen, but in that human psychology is better suited to explain why humans end up doing horrible things based on bad logic.

"Tragedy" to the victims yes and their family members, but far too often to business and the greedy, a way to pretend to feel sorry and convey that fake empathy to the public.

This is terrible news! Makes me think of some of the places I lived in when I was younger. Hippies, artists, hedonists move into low rent places, off the zoning commissions radar. Helps to revitalize the area and eventually the yuppies move in and the rents go up. Don't know the conditions of this setting but it brings back memories. Hope they don't find anymore victims.
God thinks it's fun to confuse primates. Larsen's God!

24 dead, "two dozen" still unaccounted for, according to KRON (4).

. . . 24 confirmed . . .

That's awful. I saw it on our local news yesterday. I feel terrible for the families.

About a dozen of my friends from high school and college just 'marked themselves safe' using Facebook's safety check feature. Two of my friends lost people at that fire.

...my brother was at that venue a few months ago.
