No decent MMORPGs left - there's only crap out there

RE: No decent MMORPGs left - there's only crap out there
We play DDO. It's not really story-driven like others, so if that's wht you're looking for this isn't it. The cool thing is the character customization. There are 14 classes. Each class has 2 or 3 subclasses (enhancement trees), which are mix and match. There are 14 races, and they have meaningful differences. Plus you can multi-class up to 3 classes. So, even when you know all the content, you can play it over and over with very different playstyles. You can solo most quests or join a guild to get into good groups. Pick-up groups are pretty bad from what I hear.

How about Path of Exile? It's a free to play online ARPG which you can play solo, in party or online ladder.

It's similar in ideology to Diablos I and II and while my internet isn't really good enough to play it I've found it to be a fun experience any time I picked it up.

RE: No decent MMORPGs left - there's only crap out there
I play Final Fantasy XIV. It's turned 180 from its terrible launch years ago. Why I like it:

1. I'm a huge Final Fantasy nerd, so being able to play as a classic FF job (and they have most of them... they'll be formally announcing Red Mage or Spellblade/Fencer on the 15th) is awesome for me.
2. No need for alternate characters. With the armory system, you have access to all the jobs. Playing a tank and want to dabble as a healer or DPS? Just change jobs.
3. The story. Admittedly, the story is pretty shit/non-existent until you hit level 40 (which actually doesn't take very long with all the ways to gain EXP). From levels 40-50, it improves, and you're actually given a point behind doing what you're doing. From levels 50-60, the story is amazing. You become the hero of the realm.
4. Music. FF games have always been known for their music, and XIV is no exception. The Heavensward expansion, in particular, has some amazing tracks.
5. Meaningful patch content. Not only do the devs put meaningful story progression into the patches, but they generally add two dungeons, some kind of secondary progression (raids, legendary weapons, something like Palace of the Dead, squadrons) as well. Plus a ton of items, hair styles, balance tweaks, etc.
6. Fun dungeons. Most dungeons are 4 person affairs - 1 tank, 1 healer, 2 DPS. They're pretty short (can be completed between 15-25 minutes), and they progressively teach you game mechanics.
7. Crafting. Crafting has its own jobs, and it's far more involved than opening a menu, picking 99 widgets to create, and going AFK while your character slaves away at it.

FF XIV is a subscription game, but I really enjoy it. It's more fun than WoW ever was to me, and it's designed to make you feel like you actually made progress even if you only played for an hour or so.

You are missing Elder Scrolls, which is pretty decent. They are adding housing this month.

That being said, I gotta agree the MMO market fell off a cliff. Black Desert was actually the best one I played this year, and it is a nightmare grindfest coated in pretty skills, pointless housing and in game trade, and harshly restricted player trading.

I may go back and try ESO again, maybe. I think the last seriously good MMo I played was....years ago. SWG pre NGE? Eq PoP? Vanilla Wow? Nothing recent, that's for sure. Everything now is handed to you on a silver platter.

Oh, Vanguard. ~cries hysterically~

I'm enjoying Neverwinter right now, but I haven't even reached lvl 40 yet, so I might get discouraged once I reach the levels you've described.

I've heard from a lot of people that SWTOR is good, but I haven't been able to try it myself because it's not available for Mac. Sad

When you reach the level I mentioned you'll notice how many different currencies you need to get purple equipment. All of these currencies can be obtained by killing monsters but in order to survive against these monsters you'll have to invest a truck load of money to exchange for the ingame currency and buy another purple equipment. Basically it's a vicious circle from which you can't get out no matter how much money you invest - whatever equipment you buy it's never enough, so you're forced to invest more and more money. Everything in this game is about compulsion on you to keep spending money while getting nothing for it.

I'm downloading it now. Never played this game before. Cleric's description sounds better than the rest of the classes. In principle my favorite class is the cleric or any healers role. In most games this is the class that progresses faster than the rest and has the highest chances to survive a battle, hopefully it will be the same on DDO as well.

I played a cleric in DDO. It's pretty cool. I would up making him a melee attacker to conserve spellpoints. Unfortunately there aren't very many good ways to regain sp in this game, though enemies don't respawn in most dungeons.

What is a spellpoint? Or do you mean skill points used for leveling skills up in many games?

Edit: looks like DDO will be added to the OP list of crap games. I have a Turbine account from LOTRO but despite the fact I can login DDO's page using that account, it's still not enough for the game launcher. It keeps crying about "subscription" and I can't login in the launcher. Which means this game will go to the recycle bin where it belongs! Fucking Turbine retards!

Spellpoints are like hitpoints. They're just for spells. Like a spell might require nine to cast, so it deducts that from your bar. Actually I think I remember having difficulties getting a subscription too. And you can't use your turbine points from LOTRO in DDO, for some reason. Sad
