What's your job?

I might come out of retirement for that title.

I taught middle school math the last 25 years before retiring a year and a half ago. Before that I did a number of odd jobs: cashiered at a grocery store in HS and during a first run at college; assembled hot tubs; did carpentry and did general repairs for a psychiatric ward during my final run through college. I'd like never to need to hold another paying job. I toy with renting out space through AirBNB if funds shrink too much. (Never retire in a college town but if you do don't live in a warehouse space when so many municipal funds are parcel taxes and college students are really, really generous.) Mostly now I'm tending to my garden, my dogs, my health and my fitness.

Nice jobs you guys got!! Another question if you guys would like to answer?

Do you talk about your religious views at work? Of all the co-workers I talk to over half talk about religion or god. I never told anyone I don't believe I just nod my head to whatever they are saying Tongue

I only respond that I am an atheist if asked a direct question. If people want to wear "NOTW" stenciled clothing and prattle about scripture, I just let it slide. It isn't worth the candle.

RE: What's your job?
I've been a freelance web developer (mostly back end programming) off and on. Problem is, with my disability I can only work 20-25 hours a week, and with my current living situation (and how Medicaid works), I'm not currently working at all. Which is frustrating, because I'd like to be, but it's simply not in my best economic interest to do so. Quite the opposite, in fact.

So, I generally keep busy by keeping my skills up-to-date and learning new skills. Because computers are cool, and programming is fun in a few different ways (it's a mix of puzzle solving, creating something out of nothing, and art). I asked for a Raspberry Pi for Christmas so I can make a portable hacking device (if I get it, I plan on putting Kali Linux on it). I may also dabble with Unreal 4... I've had a couple game ideas bouncing around in my brain for years.

EDIT: worst part about being a freelance web developer is that clients suck. Most have no idea what they want, no idea how technology works, and actively think you're trying to screw them over because, well, things like web hosting and various programming and design tools cost money, not to mention your time and expertise. So, a lot of times it's a struggle to convince them that you're worth what they're paying, and that as a freelancer, your portfolio is your life, so you're not about to sabotage yourself by producing buggy shit.

RE: What's your job?
I've had a huge assortment of jobs in the nearly 40 years I've been in the workforce -- IT technician, silkscreen printer, executive secretary, shipper/receiver, playing cheesy songs on an electric organ at the shopping mall -- but My current job is The. Best.

I type medical reports at a hospital.

It's like a trip to med school, only they pay you. In the past 10 years I've learned tons of things about general radiology, mammography, ear/nose/throat, psychiatry, hypertension, nephrology, urology, cardiology, gastroenterology, respirology (including sleep disorders), obstetrics/gynecology, physiatry/rehabilitation medicine, endocrinology, infectious diseases, and neurology.

Sounds like a very smart strategy under the circumstances.

When I was well enough to work I was a maths teacher, then a customer service rep.

Now I do voluntary work when I can, such as greeting the public at a cat rehoming center. I'm training to become a bookkeeper from home, but my studies have halted for some time due to a decline in my mental energy.

RE: What's your job?
I am currently a senior cosmetology student. I take my state boards test in January and will graduate sometime around the end of January or the beginning of Feb.

The field I would like to specialize in would be a hair colorist. I could potentially get certified in that, but the certification is well over $800.

I absolutely love playing with hair color formulas. None of that shit in a box, sold on the shelves. Nope... I use the professional stuffs.

I've got my eyes on a private salon. Went in there on Tuesday. The owner was interested enough that I was handed an application and told to fill it out and bring it back in next week. The place is within walking distance of my home.

Programming for data analysis of diagnostics applied to nuclear fusion research.
I've worked with visible light tomography, infrared thermography, microwave reflectometry, and some spectroscopy.

Luthier. I'm self-employed, so I don't talk much about anything, let alone atheism, during work. When I do talk, it's usually limited to comments like, 'Where the fuck did I put that gouge?'
