I was sad that Carrie Fisher died, but that combined with Debbie Reynolds going the very next day has hit me like a brick. I let my mom know I love her first chance I had, and I think I'll watch Postcards from the Edge tonight.

Good points made by all. I remember waiting in line to see Star Wars seven times...before VCRs. I was twelve and it captured my imagination more than any movie that came before. (I was too young to truly appreciate 2001 but for some odd reason I liked Logan's Run...more action I suppose). Let's see, I read Foster's novellization, had the comic books (gone now to my dismay, the 1978 calendar (which I still have), the Escape from Death Star board game, and a ton of trading cards (which I sold on Ebay).

So I understand the importance of Star Wars as a phenomena not the least was the jump start is gave to Science Fiction movies and television: Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rodgers, etc. I think Space 1999 and Logan's Run (the television series) came before, though. Does anyone know if Space 1999 is available to watch again anywhere? That would be kinda interesting to watch again.

If the young age - almost twice my Sam's - isn't enough (and it should be), there's this.

At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Space 1999 is available on HULU for free and probably elsewhere as well.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I much admit that as far as celebrity deaths go, hers does not seem significant enough to warrant more than passing (no pun intended) notice. She was an actress of average talent who played a supporting role in three popular movies and a cameo in a fourth movie of the same franchise. It seems like people are actually morning the imagined lose of the fictional character of Princess Leia.

Honestly, that's what I thought as the extreme news coverage of Whitney Houston's death kept growing four years ago.

It was sad that she died, but it definitely wasn't important in my opinion.

Whatever her importance, she deserves more attention than Mother Theresa got, and she got a lot when she died and would have gotten even more if it hadn't been for Diana.

Tv people know there's a lot of geeks out there who find this important so they'll stick it on the tv.

It's a pretty simplistic popularity contest, I imagine princess Leah or whatever her name was is more popular than whatever gene wilder did, I liked him in willy wonkas chocolate factory.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.
