Are the words "Sin" and "Hell" a trigger to you Atheists?

"Sin" and "Hell" have roughly the same impact on my psyche as "The Dark Side" and "Mordor", except that I associate the latter words with entertainment and therefore actually care about them in some way.

My wife appears to have some sort of belief in hell, even though she's not religious. I couldn't joke around about the subject with her without upsetting her, I expect. I don't know where she got it from. I think "sin" would be less problematic but would still carry a little weight.

From my perspective it's a 99% chance there's no god, and thus non-existence and nothing to fear from death. On the offchance that God exists, then as I said before, he is a creature of whim... that would be a sucky reality but if true I'd rather accept hell than go to heaven. There is freedom in accepting that rather than living ever indebted to the whims of another who does not deserve to have dominion over you. So that's how I approach it. Anyway night night again. |
