Are the words "Sin" and "Hell" a trigger to you Atheists?

"Sin" and "Hell" have roughly the same impact on my psyche as "The Dark Side" and "Mordor", except that I associate the latter words with entertainment and therefore actually care about them in some way.

My wife appears to have some sort of belief in hell, even though she's not religious. I couldn't joke around about the subject with her without upsetting her, I expect. I don't know where she got it from. I think "sin" would be less problematic but would still carry a little weight.

All those sorts of words trigger for me are new agey connotations... mysticism etc. And in your case, words used to add meaning and mystique to your quest for the carrot; theists are heaven-seekers... that's it. The language used to describe that quest and/or God, no matter how noble-sounding, beautiful, or poetic is just window dressing that maintains the delusion that it's anything more than heaven-seeking. That's how I see it.

What are noble intentions then? Despairing of the after life? Not seeking a guide? Not seeking a path that is truthful and is upon truth? Not seeking a way to something higher? Not seeking illumination from light?

Whatever, pal. Goodnight.

ETA: that was probably uncalled for... I'm sorry, I'm tired. From my perspective it's a 99% chance there's no god, and thus non-existence and nothing to fear from death. On the offchance that God exists, then as I said before, he is a creature of whim... that would be a sucky reality but if true I'd rather accept hell than go to heaven. There is freedom in accepting that rather than living ever indebted to the whims of another who does not deserve to have dominion over you. So that's how I approach it.

Anyway night night again.
