It's part of the Just World fallacy.

They have to hope something horrible happens to a horrible person as an heinous example so as to avoid feeling despair or outrage at bad people getting away with figurative and literal murder.

Because in their mind, of course, living the rest of your life in a supermax prison is 'getting away with it.'

That's what I would wish on him. For the rest of his life. First, he more than deserves that kind of comfort, and secondly, it is reversible. There's hardly any doubt he did what he's been convicted of, but I'm not so sure about his mental state when he did what he did.

The way I see it, the world won't improve at all just because this guy is punished further. Locking him away will stop the world from getting worse on account of his actions, but I don't see what anything beyond that will do.

Have you heard the phrase "Three hots and a cot?" It's often echoed by pro-death penalty advocates to conjure up a fanciful and fake image of what life in prison is like.

Death penalty isn't about reducing crime because it doesn't have a significant impact.

Death penalty isn't about justice given its false positive rate and disproportionate application towards specific minorities.

That leaves the emotional arguments for it, which dovetails with my opening statement of meals and beds in prisons.

All there are are emotional arguments. I get it, though. This man did something so heinous, I cannot even imagine being the family of any of the victims.

None of that changes the fact that this is state sponsored murder, and that killing Dylan Roof is advancing a system that has killed innocent people, and will again.

Jesus specifically rebuked that Old Testament law:  "You have heard that it was said, 'and eye for an eye', but I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." Unfortunately we still have many Christians who are for the DP. There is 0 excuse for that, considering Jesus specifically opposed it on multiple occasions.

Not for me. Even if 100% of death row inmates were guilty of heinous crimes, I'd still be against it. Mainly because there is 0 point to it in the modern day where we can keep them locked up and away from society.

If one is looking for consistency, the Bible is not a good source.  If it had a mouth it would be talking out of both corners, often at the same time.

My personal opinion about Dillon Roof is that he was a white racist trash and murderer who deserves the death penalty.  That is not to say that the death penalty is not applied fairly in all cases.  Whether it is because of cops being sloppy in their investigative work or they have it in for someone or whether juries are selected for making sure of a certain outcome, causing further injustice, sometimes innocent people of the crime of murder (some criminals no doubt have been put to death for a murder they did not commit, though they may have been actually guilty of say, grand theft auto).  Many of you have made valid points.  It would seem the death penalty issue can be complex.

The Charleston Church Murders has highlighted for me one interesting observation in regards to unfounded claims to truth, namely, religious belief.  The Christian Creator God has all that power to magically cause a Universe, yet, cannot, or will not, for any reason save 9 people in South Carolina from being shot to death by a racist bastard, nor keep 20 children in New Jersey from being slaughtered by a crazed gunman.  There are over a dozen or more references in the Bible (pick one, Heb. 13:8, Psalm 90:2, Malachi 3:6, etc., etc.) stating outright or hinting at the ancient Canaanite war god being the same from yesteryear to today.  Judging from his character content and actions of the Torah/Old Testament, Yahweh is quite a dick.  So if the Judeo-Christian god is real, he has been a complete jerk, is a complete jerk, and will always be a complete jerk.  He (do invisible imaginary friends who live in the sky have genitalia?) is not worthy of my worship, let alone anyone else's with a sane mind.

That's why I always put one caveat in when talking about Capital Punishment. I'm sure if someone hurt my loved ones, I would like that person to suffer. I understand the ones who clamor for their death. The caveat always has a second part though. The state isn't supposed to carry out my revenge but to keep society safe. And that can be done just as well by locking them away.

I always admire the victim's families who staunchly oppose capital punishment. And there are lots of them. I'm not entirely sure, but I seem to remember that even in this case, family members spoke out against dishing out death.

Oh sweetie you forgot about us rednecks that are cheering it on. I don't give a flying fuck about him being raped in prison nor it being more humane. I know what prison is like because my brother was in it and he told me all the awful shit that goes on there. But darlin karma isn't real, there is nothing that will make up for all the lives he took. He shouldn't get to live in any shape or form while there are so many dead at his hand. He wanted to murder others then he gets murdered. Lesson learned? Don't kill if you don't want to die.
