Signature Size Limit

It feel like some members are abusing the signature line by inserting large images and lengthy blocks of text. It really destroys the quality of the user experience. Here I am happily scrolling down a thread and suddenly my quick search grinds to a halt forcing me to scroll through someones signature line for the 100th time.

Hahahaha!!!

You would be all bothered by something this silly.  Wink
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

I think you've got that the wrong way round... on a phone you generally use the mobile version which has no signatures... it's only on a computer or when using the full site on a mobile that signatures are visible... and in my case, only when using a computer that I'm using a mouse with a scroll wheel. So since I'm on my phone right now, even if I do switch over to the full version, I won't be able to see if your signature causes the scrolling problem because I have no mouse.

I would prefer if they were limited in size as well, such that they didn't have their own individual vertical scrollbars... because that's what messes up the scrolling with the mouse wheel; with signatures shorter than that, there's no problem.

It shouldn't mess up scrolling if your cursor is positioned off to the side, depending on what OS you are using I suppose.

The problem with imposing limits is it's extremely difficult to actually impose them. Number of lines we can do, but image sizes...not easy to determine because the image loads after the rest of the page, so we'd have to involve some JavaScript checks. Then what happens if someone posts 2 images just under the allowed height? We'd have to resort to manually checking and removing images from signatures. I'd rather have the staff put their efforts into post moderation, especially when you can disable signatures.

I don't know... I'm not on my computer right now... all I know is it was never really a problem until I started using Firefox (as opposed to Chrome)... but maybe it's just that everyone has big signatures now and that was just a coincidence Wink

Yeah I understand, and it also dawned on me that it's probably all relative... whether there are scrollbars or not probably depends on the size of someone's screen, so a fixed size limit probably wouldn't make much difference, especially in edge cases (very small screens).

I like my current one. It's funny because it's true.

Mine is there to show that even theist aren't completely useless. They can always serve as a bad example...

Pretty sure jQuery  will allow you to measure the total height of a div, no matter what's in it, and I'm pretty sure I could do it in an afternoon. Basically, I'd scale all images and text down to fit a particular max height of div. If someone wants their text wall to look like a postage stamp, then that can be up to them. Tongue

http://api.jquery.com/height/

Edit: just a hint, the div in which sigs lie has the css class name "signature scaleimages" which indicates to me that MyBB already has this feature built-in.

I've literally never had a problem with signatures. How often do you accidentally scroll into one before you think "maybe I should just put my cursor on the side?"

Well, I don't use a mouse, so I guess scrolling with the TouchPad or arrow keys doesn't carry that risk

Before I turned signatures off, it happened fairly frequently. It was only really annoying when I ran into a signature that was super long.

I don't need your approval, thank you very much. He always has the option to turn signatures off if they bother him that much as others have already said.
