Plenty of people here that can do it and prisoners to use for our other general labour.

I know you think that, but you're wrong...and it honestly doesn't matter how many people you have at your disposal when it comes to public works projects, more labor is always better.  Assign everyone you have available to projects...and you'll sill have other projects holding on labor. That;s sort of the point of a national service in the first place, to provide labor for projects in which the state has an interest.......?

Anyone attempting to enter the country illegally via Calais should be returned to France immediately.  A limited amount of child (actual children, not 25 year olds) refugees without parents and other families should be allowed in but they shouldn't be granted citizenship and should return home once ISIS are dealt with.

Getting back to the OP... I'd be against any form of forced gov't work, no matter how many benefits they might stick onto it.

Insomuch as it provides a way to productively employ refugees in the interest of your state, yeah....which kind of implies that they have some legal interaction with your state, numbskull. You can;t exactly agree to a contract with a government if you're fucking sneaking around dodging border controls.

I told you already, it should be a limited number of unaccompanied child refugees that are let in. They should be sent back in a few years time.

Getting citizenship and permanent residency in Britain is piss easy, that's the fucking problem. At least your country makes it relatively difficult to become a citizen.

There are so many ways for this to go horribly wrong. We can't even trust the government to protect the basic freedoms provided to us by the constitution. I'm sure as shit not willing to let them start mandating labor, no matter noble the cause may be.

I think the difference might be that in the UK, in most cases the actual labour in infrastructure projects is outsourced to private sector firms, e.g roads. I think the rail network instastructure (network rail) is some sort of quasi-government structure but their employees are not actual civil servants.

Germany had this type of mandatory service for men until a few years ago. Either Military or social type work. It worked great, and the young "civil servants" were an important corner stone of social sevices and care for the elderly. I myself got a 3 month medical education and worked as a paramedic assistant/ambulance driver during my service.
