"There is a god because e = mc²"

RE: "There is a god because e = mc²"
Shit RR, you might be onto something...

Alex, could all the stored nuclear energy sitting dormantly in what we call matter, be the other counterbalance to all the dark energy out there?

Just done some quick calculations with my fingers, they are equal!
No God needed, just simple maths! Hehe
No God, No fear.

Nope, the energy sitting dormant in matter via E=mc^2 is precisely what is causing the gravitation we know and love - it is already taken into account in standard cosmology.

I knew I had good reason to hate that movie for that!!! Stupid science-illiterate hollywood writers have to put "love" everywhere so they can dumb the script down to something they understand.

Yep. I haven't seen it, but I'd heard about that cringeworthy part from the Half in the Bag review on RedLetterMedia. And at least one sucker in the world took that idea seriously.

I tried to tell him, hey ya know maybe love is just something in your head, and nothing more.

Agree but we all know you can't sell a science blockbuster on facts .... you need an emotional connection... typical Hollywood SOP.

I have nothing against love in sci fi, of course any movie needs the human experience and conflict, otherwise it's not a movie. Love between father and daughter struggling with the ramifications of cosmic black hole wormhole time dilation, great. Love is the universal force that steers the wormhole to establish a long distance connection behind your daughter's bookshelf so you can send barely noticeable messages by letting some books shake? Big nope. That's Star Wars, that's fantasy magic a la the force - the writer demonstrating their inability to write science fiction.

Yeah, it was an archilles heel for Interstellar which stopped it from being a "2001" scifi classic to just another good scifi popcorn flick.

I suppose you need to balance science with science fiction and find some digestible common ground.

What I can't stand more than anything is when the mix changes. eg: They go to a lot of trouble to try to validate and legitimise the original Batman with a back story to explain why Bruce is the way he is...also explaining how and why the joker became the Joker. So far so good.
An then out of the blue the joker pulls out a stupid unfolding party gun and shoots down Batman from the sky!
That's when my eyes started rolling and I had to downgrade my expectations right down... It's just insulting ... They create a universe for you and go and change the rules whenever they like!

Any clue what he could be talking about? Or where he could have gotten this idea?

I wish I could say I was adept at mathematics and physics, but I am not.

But I recall someone of my acquaintance, who is both very scientific but also a theist,
observing that the second law of thermodynamics dictates something to the effect that
entropy succeeds over time; everything winds down, like a clock, including the Universe

...and that raises the interesting question about who wound the clock up, in the first place...

But I'm way out of my depth with it, sadly.

That's just a rephrase of the Uncaused Causer argument of Aquinas, and it fails on "who created the creator?" just as surely.

It's also being misled by the analogy. Comparing the Universe to a clock in order to illustrate one aspect of it doesn't mean it has every aspect of a clock. Asking who wound the clock makes as much sense as asking where the hands are, or has anyone set the alarm for the morning.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Maybe time is actually running backwards towards the big bang, and we simply can only remember the future... think about it...
