If the environment provides for being big, things start to grow. But it's also true the other way round. They found pet dinosaurs on a remote island. Not enough food to grow to the size of houses, so nature took care of that.

Every penguin is the size of a human, depending on the age of the human.
Some dragonflies had wingspans of up to 28 inches. Some combination of higher oxygen content, higher air density, and lack of flying predators (birds weren't a thing back then) allowed this size. There's some scientific dispute about which was most important, but the most popular thought seems to be that oxygen/air density set an upper bound on insect size, and then the average size within that upper bound is dictated largely by predation forces.

But srsly megafauna and prehistoric gigantism is one of my favorite things to read about.

Emperor penguins are already over 4 foot. So that's like a small person. So these ancient penguins aren't actually that much bigger.

It needs to be the size of a Tyrannosaurus. Then I'd be impressed.

Besides, we've already known a human sized penguin here at AF. And he wasn't impressive either.
