RE: Damned Catholics
Quote: The xtian god is an incoherent being and therefore irrational

It is interesting that you lack the ability to concieve of God. I can understand a being of which no greater can be concieved. If that is not understandable to you then you lack something that I do not.

Quote:Why is the xtian god irrational? Becuase his attributes are logcial contradictory (and they are well surveyed and understood). As yet their xtian refutations amount to ah but we don't really understand god, and are extremely weak.

It is rational to conculde that if there is another realm not subject to change that it would be wholly different than are own and that are minds would not have access to it as we have nothing to compare it to. It would be irrational for their to be love, intrinisic value, etc. unless there was such a thing as God, but if there is such a thing then love etc can make sense. Once more I believe in love a priori.

Quote:There are also a set of powerful inductive arguments (hiddeness of god, mind-brain connection, religious confusion, success of natural science, the problem of innocent suffering and evil; to which the bluster of the FWD has not been totally successful), which make atheism far more likely. Whether you think they amount to a refutation will depend on your view of each of the premises and arguments.

I agree for the most part. I just say that these arguements are not as persusive as the arguments theists give.

Quote:There are many heros and monsters in all walks of life, it proves nothing about Catholicism nor any other organisation. I wonder if the little boys and girls who were raped, (which was then covered up by the institution you seem to want to promote) are warmed by your condemnation or those of the pope.

I agree. Yeah I doubt many of them will be "warmed" by anything. The evil predators injured them in such a way that is most difficult to heal. But I hope that they will find healing. And I understand that there is nothing I can do to make it right, and I wish there was something I could do. However, I do belive that Christ did something that will make it right in time. And I belive there healing will come in relation to how well they accept that Christ will heal them of all their wounds. Of course this is my view, and many do not share it, and that is ok. I choose to hope that the evils of this world will be swallowed up and inundated with a love that is so powerful as to make all evil look insignificant in comparison.

I do not have the capacity to believe in a conceptual perfection as it is impossible to quantify, subjective to the observer and is an emergent and not necessary quality of any being. It cannot emerge in a god as they have to be perfect at t0.

The other realm would need defining first. But if you go in for these arguments, without being able to provide evidence, then I could postualte that it is rational to conclude that there is a super-super natural realm (that a supernatural god is unaware of), where they make gods (without them knowing) and place them in the super-natural realm and make them think they are perfect, and that would be different again. And so on...we can all postualte around ontological arguments but they are frail and prove nothing.

Love etc are emotions triggered by bio-chemical reactions and are rooted in physicality and the natural world. God is notably absent in MRI images. Note here that the atheist will not concede that this makes love etc valueless nor less powerful and enriching, it just makes it real.

But God is in concept outside of time. Supernature is not irration and impossible it is, if it is real, not subject to reason. I define the univese as the temporal realm that was put into flux by an Unmoved Mover, of both the metaphysical realm, and the physical realm.

That view presupposes things that are unknowable and is an appeal to magic and mysticism. It carries as much authority as stating there is something in crystal healing and astrology.

Nothing you wouldn't already expect from the Vatican of course.

@ cpt scarlet

Yes I do believe that some things are unknowable by man. However, I believe all things are known by God Smile

Then "God" knows how your life will turn out even before you're born, right? Then what is the sense of allowing a child to be born when this deity already knows that the child will have horrible birth defects, never know what is going on, suffer terribly, cause incredible emotional pain and financially devestate the family?
Science flies us to the moon and stars. Religion flies us into buildings.

God allowed 200,000 people to die in an earthquake. So what makes you think he cares about YOUR problems?
