However, those centers were sharply criticized for keeping children detained even if they were still with their parents. A court ruled that those detention centers  and that families should be released together.

The Obama White House also had a policy of releasing families through a program called Alternatives to Detention that still allowed them to be closely supervised — for instance, by giving mothers ankle monitors before releasing them.

Apparently, putting mommies in ankle jail for the crime of fleeing with their children to a "better" place wasn;t cruel enough for this administration.

37% is the number I keep coming across. That's a lot of people. Certainly enough to say the policy of just letting people go, and hoping they come back isn't a practical one.

Exactly. There's no lack of understanding in what's going on from the immigrant perspective.  They want to live in the US instead of some shithole country.  Illegally entering with a kid is the best option available.  Or was the best option available.  Probably still is, because plenty of people get in without being caught.

If I'm fleeing from Guatamala, I'd probably try the regular border. Then if I got rejected, try to come in illegally. Although, I'm curious what Mexico's immigration laws are. Because if my real goal is to avoid being murdered in Guatamala, Mexico seems like it could do the trick if the US said no.

The simple fact that we find ourselves in comparison to guatemala or mexico means shit;s gone sideways, as far as I;m concerned.  At least in guatemala and mexico the criminals are the ones committing the human rights violations.....though.

You still are missing the point, nobody is arguing illegal immigrants should not be detained or expelled, they are arguing that separating the children from the parents is unnecessary and cruel.

This is the part where people don't understand what's happening.  The trick is you usually have to make it all the way to the bottom of a long article to find it, if it's even included.  When you hear Trump blames democrats, this is what he's referring to.

A two-decade-old court settlement, the Flores settlement, and a law called the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act both specify how the government must treat migrant children.

They require that migrant children be placed in "the least restrictive environment" or sent to live with family members. They also limit how long families with children can be detained; courts have interpreted that limit as 20 days.

So the legal options for the government are:  
1) Release the family into the US and give them a court date.  A date many just won't show up to. 
2) Detain until the court date, which means you have to split up the family, because only the adults can be detained for that long.

Because our law enforcement has such a great track record of treating people in cages well. There aren't any stories about people dying in a cell from a medical emergency or dehydration as cops watch on, right?
