A question for evolustionists

RE: A question for evolustionists
Wow, I read that message in a restaurant and probably everyone at the tables around me are looking why I laughed so hard.

The idea that humans are somehow the thing animals should aspire to evolve to really describes the sheer arrogance of a creationist mindset.

I'm just trying to UNDERSTAND, if my question shows 'sheer arrogance', then please point it out to me and correct me. After all, that's why I made this thread. Read the last part of my last post.

Quote:Just as a side note, to minimalist and chuck, if you want people to listen to what you have to say, try not treating them like shit.

You haven't been treated like shit. Yet.

I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt but you're making it difficult.

I'm pretty sure that gauging whether or not someone is treated like shit or not is down to how it makes that person feel. Also, saying 'yet' like that really doesn't help me trying to listen to what you have to say. Explain how I'm making it difficult.

Some will say, "oh, not this again. For the 128,395th time now..." Don't take it personally, it's just exhaustion with the same go-round.

You can say it is for the 128,395+1 time now.

I have a link for you that will explain evolution with complete references.

(December 9, 2010 at 1:10 pm)16three-john Wrote: So I made a thread on morality, and a reply concerning evolution really got me thinking...If evolution got us humans where we are today, why didn't all animals keep evolving until they're humans? Also, why are humans the last stop on the evolutionary train? Why haven't humans evolved into 10 armed 3 headed super-humans? I just think that with so much body-enhancing things around today, that nature would have thought of it first, instead of its product (humans). Again, no twisting of answers or preaching is gonna come from me, promise Smile

There are a few false assuptions here:

The first is that evolution isn't a ladder. Evolution is a process by which species evolve to suit their environment through a combination of mutation and natural selection. There is no ultimate result of evolution because it is an ongoing process. All life on Earth is still evolving.

The second is that we have evolved multi-headed and multi-armed humans, but those mutations tend to not be beneficial so they rarely get passed on to the next generation and nowadays, doctors surgically remove the additional or parasitic parts.
Just to note though that the vast majority of mutations are benign, but there are beneficial ones as well, such as resistance to disease and such. The example in the link above is certainly not beneficial.
If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925

Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first. ~Ronald Reagan

Because the level of understanding that you display about the TOE is like a caricature of creationist nonsense. I can only go by the quality of the questions you asked and frankly they were dismal. Really, they were just slightly better than the "if humans descended from apes why are there still apes" line of silliness.

Evolution is not a ladder.

Subjectively speaking one may question why haven't all life forms evolved into larger creatures like Blue Whales except they forget there is no objectively true "goal" or ultimate species in mind or higher life form here.

What you get with evolution is competition for resources, bearing in mind natural selection is a key factor here; those that evolve with the beneficiary attributes that help them adapt best in their environment can survive and thrive and maybe even become successful organisms; those that can't cope or develop obstructive features that hinder them inevitably decline or go extinct altogether.

EDIT: Oops sorry, TheDarkestOfAngels I didn't read your post there, you've pretty much said all there needs to be said. :c

@16

Your misunderstanding of the word 'religion' did not bode well.

This has been followed up by an apparent misunderstanding of the word 'atheist' and stunning ignorance of the most basic ideas of evolution. No wonder people were a bit blunt in their responses. You need a thick skin and sense of humour here.

The word 'atheist' comes from the Greek 'atheos" a=not theos=god. An atheist is simply a person who does not believe in gods.Period.

Atheism is NOT a religion,an ideology,a moral code,a world view or a club. There is no such thing as an atheist position on any subject other than the existence of God(s)

I'm an agnostic atheist.I assert " I do not believe in god(s) due to lack of evidence" As an atheist,I have no views on evolution, morality, politics, climate change or any other topic . However, as a skeptic, materialist, egoist, utilitarian, cynic and misanthrope I have views on many things.I'm not here to teach anyone anything and don't argue with apologists, I don't have the patience.Nor do I care about your personal superstitions.

We owe you exactly nothing. All I'll say about your treatment here is you've been treated far better than atheists on Christian forums.

RE: A question for evolustionists
As others have said already, you will have to familiarize yourself with the idea of evolution via natural selection before you can even ask intelligent questions about it. Once you understand it, it becomes pretty obvious, and once it becomes obvious, you'll be able to answer your own questions. In the meantime, you'll probably develop a few questions while you learn about it (assuming you do). Don't be afraid to ask those questions. As you hopefully noticed, there were a few perfectly valid answers amongst the mockery and ridicule (which was pretty minimal, honestly).

Despite what many religious sects teach, knowledge is good.
