Just as horrendous as god killing all of the firstborn sons of Egypt, including cows.  Exodus 12:29. 

Or god killing children with bears. 2 Kings 2:23-25. At least he was a little inventive with this massacre.

I can’t say that this particular story ‘shaped my mentality’ since I had ample reason to know, from other stories, that people often fabricate narratives to serve their purposes.

As a child, I understood that much and thought others did, as well. At least some of us.

Referring to the infants killed in lieu of baby Jesus as 'innocents' is heresy in that it denies their culpability in original sin.

 The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

It's going to be hard to argue that a baby is sinful, while also claiming that life is precious.
