The 1883 eruption emptied a large magma chamber below the volcano which collapsed generating the spectacular effects of that event.
It's difficult to tell how big the magma chamber is now but given how regularly it's erupting ATM it doesn't look like there'll be a catastrophic eruption for a while.

While Krakatau is the accepted Indonesian name, and it's possible that "Krakatoa" was a typo that stuck after some non Portuguese typesetter misspelled Krakatao, the fact remains that it has, indeed, stuck. I typed the name in Wikipedia, and the article name is still "Krakatoa" and not "Krakatao." And unlike cases like, say Genghis Khan, there's no huge digression about how historians are coming around to a certain, different, spelling.
