Baptism and religious family
I went to a Roman Catholic baptism this weekend. My boyfriend's cousin had a baby a few months ago, so she went through the silly water-sprinkling ritual to appease the deeply religious family.
I had a hard time refraining from snickering and rolling my eyes throughout the whole thing. It's pretty amusing from an outsider's perspective. Kinda pathetic too. Mostly we just repeated dry, ritualistic prayers, answered 'Lord hear our prayer' after every damn thing the priest said, said the Lord's Prayer at least 3 times. Lots of talk about renouncing Satan, and cleansing this child of original sin, and allowing her to join the faithful family of the One True God, so she can have a place in heaven. What I found most disturbing was the constant urging to instill the Catholic doctrine in this child, for her parents and family to make sure she is 'educated' about God, that she says her prayers and participates in rituals, that she develops a strong faith. The priest even talked about her possible future as a 'sister of the faith' (a nun), and our need to make disciples out of all young people, teaching them about Christ their savior, and God their heavenly father. All the older generations were nodding emphatically and blessing each other and getting down on their knees to pray about it. This is the family I'll be marrying into someday. But there's no way I'm raising my kids in any church. Neither my boyfriend nor I want a religious wedding either. I guess we'll cross that bridge in a few years, but I have a feeling it's not going to be pretty... ![]() Oh, and apparently the priest performing the baptism had spent a bunch of time in jail... I guess he found Jesus in there or something

I guess we'll cross that bridge in a few years, but I have a feeling it's not going to be pretty...When I married my wife I was somewhat deistic moving towards agnostic, and my wife could care less. So we rented out a hall to hold our wedding in. We had the ceremony with a justice of the peace and the party at the same place, ordered a keg of beer, told everyone in the invitation that they could dress however they want ( I wore a dress shirt and tie with flowers in the pocket and my wife wore a type of sun dress with a laurel of flowers in her hair that I asked the women to help out with and they thought it was a wonderful idea.). The ritual was more secular than anything else with just a passing mention of god, which was the way I liked it at the time. So yes, there are many ways you can do it.. if I may suggest something..try something NEW and ORIGINAL and try to make it where it includes family members helping out and getting involved instead of boring rituals (like the flower laurel or something). |

RE: Baptism and religious family
Just being a catholic does not mean you have to agree with whatever the fuck the church is doing, i know many a catholic who stopped going to church as a protest to the direction it is taking (mostly because of the new Pope's retarded comments).

Quote:i know many a catholic who stopped going to church Then they are no longer 'catholics' at least as far as Herr Von Popenfuhrer is concerned. And anyone who STOPS going along with their bullshit is thus automatically a lot smarter than the dumb mother-fuckers who continue to support these criminals. Get it now? |

RE: Baptism and religious family
My wife is somewhat of a Catholic and we are having a child next week(scheduled c-section). I recently found out that she wants to have our kid batptized and it makes me sick to my stomach. I seriously thought it was only to appease the older members of her family but after some inquiries I found out it's what she wants. Now I am really dreading the whole thing and probably will throw up a little in my mouth during the ceremony but it's her kid too. I will take the oaths seriously as I will be 'educating' him about God.

And if you admit those protesting the actions of the Church are a lot smarter than the others, then the whole "fuck ALL catholics" thing kindda falls apart. |
