Osama may be dead.

RE: Osama may be dead.
How is no one not happy in the slightest ? It's good news ! Yeah it doesn't actually change anything in itself, but symbols are important. Killing Osama is a big win for Obama which increases his chances of reelection, which is good enough for me. It also shows that terrorists do not go unpunished.

And symbols are not just a meaningless tool for the masses: they have a profound effect on the real world. Can't we just let the World rejoice for a day ?

As to the theory of "we had his rotting body for years", there is no evidence of that anywhere, so why believe it ?

RE: Osama may be dead.
Okay so he's finally dead (officially) ... and he probably deserved it because he and his Taliban guys did a lot of terrible things to their own people such as destroying schools and killing innocent civilians. However, I don't think it would make a big difference even if he died naturally because he can't do much harm from his hiding place anymore, and he would have to stay there for the rest of his life, and death will inevitably come to him one day anyways.

And if this is true, then I'm a little bit surprised to see how someone can hide for so long. I used to think that there was good chance that he was dead already except that no one was reporting it.

I thought that too Rayaan, My hypothesis was that he'd been killed dring the Afganistan invasion, and his body blown apart or buried beneath rubble. Guess I was wrong Tongue

Now, what I am thinking about is: Did they intentionally killed him or were they trying to capture him and he got killed when he fought back? To me it was more important to capture him alive.

I would not have allowed him to survive his capture even if he turned himself in. The obama administration effectively lost all capacity to deal with a captured bin laden to American advantage when it reversed itself on the public trial issue concerning guantanamo bay detainees. There is no reason to want to possess a living bin laden.

So, if the guy was raising his hands screaming "don't shoot me", it was right to kill him then?

Fuck yeah, A desire to kill mass murders is a good desire, and if you doubt that I invite you to re-watch the videos of people plummeting to their deaths after jumping from the tower to avoid burning to death.

I'm not watching the first three TV movies about this raid. They always get it wrong at first. So it will be at least next Sunday before a good one appears.

Or maybe longer?

...
Obama had nothing to do with it.
From the speech last night:

Quote:I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden. It was far from certain. And it took many months to run this thread to ground. I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we could located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside Pakistan. And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action and authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice.
Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Pakistan.

They don't call him "Commander in Chief" for nothing. He directly authorized and ordered actions that lead to Osama's death.

Quote:Actually, if he did what he said he was going to do, none of those men who killed bin Laden would have been overseas to do it.
What is this referring to? Obama campaigned on increasing military presence in Afghanistan, and increasing funding and manpower on the hunt for Osama in particular. This is exactly what he said he was going to do.
