Here come the kids...

RE: Here come the kids...
Did you just use the words 'informed' and 'creationist' to describe a singular person?

Quote:I agree with Adrian we don't limit access here based on age, only maturity.

No offence, but I think that view is a little disingenuous. As a general principle children and adolescents are not as mature as adults. That's why we have the concept of legal majority:

EG There are legal ages for :

Sexual activity

Drinking alcohol

Seeing certain films

Driving a car

Signing a contract

Voting

Getting married

Joining the armed forces.

I repeat my assertion that there should be age restrictions on some forums.Indeed, there are on many,13 is common. I continue to hold my opinion that debating children here was inappropriate. I guess this is an issue which I will need to differ, even as a minority of one.

In general I agree with you, how ever all those things you listed are because in general we would rather the few that are mature enough to handle things not be allowed to than have a bunch who are not able to handle things be allowed and get hurt for it.

We do not deal with such large numbers and on a case-by-case basis determine who is mature enough to handle what we present. 13 is probably a good are in general to go with, as in many countries 13 is even the legal age to sign up for things on the internet. Given our language it probably would be fine but, I would rather allow an intelligent 10 year old who is capable of understanding reality in than block him out for his age.

For me it's passing on traditions that have been a bane in the past. Too many times I was blocked from even simple things like going to see a movie because I was not old enough, when I was more mature that 90% of people of that age.

Hehe yeah, sorry Smile I know personally two very clever people, both teachers at my local school (RE and Chemistry). The RE teacher I've discussed this several times with, and he comes up with some very good arguments. Unfortunately I don't see either of them much now. I've also tried to engage some dude who made good arguments on one of the god channels.

Not saying they're right, just very good at debating the subject. I'd just like to see a debate on the subject not so one sided.

The only way not to get such a one-sided debate is if the creationists stop using the "let's start with discrediting the ToE, and then conclude Creation/ID is correct". That fails every time. What they should do is come up with arguments backing up their claim. Then you will have a much more equal debate.

My daughter (just turned 14) and most of her friends are atheist, I don't think the problem over here (UK) is lack of disbelief, I think it's lack of interest ... the difference is that I am more than willing to put myself out there and say I'm atheist, it's important to me because I believe religion is a bad thing. Both my daughter's are atheist (the other is 19) but where I can logically detail all the reasons why I am they don't give a crap ... it's just obvious to them (it's just obvious there's no god, shrug and walk away to do something more interesting).

Kyu

I am so entirely familiar with that attitude Kyu - for a start I used to be like that myself.
But basically ALL atheists I have ever know or ever know seem to either not mention it or use the word much...or they just think 'it's obvious' and they don't believe in God but they don't attack religion..

I've known of 1 or two people who are anti religion and will talk to you about it. But it's still only a very small thing for them and they don't really 'give a shit'.
And often there are those atheists who will CALL themselves atheists...but they never talk about religion for against. But at least they understand the actual definition eh?

Yep plenty of disinterested atheists who say their atheists and indeed do just mean 'they don't believe in God'. And that IS what it means.
It seems to me though that there are also plenty of people who are atheists by definition - they don't believe in God. They SAY they don't believe in God but they just don't 'call themselves atheists.'

Often these atheists will just say they are 'not religious'. But they don't believe in God so they are actually atheists by definition - but they either don't use the term because they think it's easily misunderstood and they don't like using a taboo word (one of the good reasons I think not to back away); either that or they misunderstand the definition themselves. They don't believe in God but they think atheists (or people who CALL themselves atheists) are just like 'overly militant non-believers' or something.

I've known - and known of - in the past; plenty of atheists who call themselves simply 'non-religious'.
I just want to say to those people "Hey guys if you don't believe in God then you're an atheist. That's all it means. It doesn't mean you are 'being a dick about it' if you call yourself an atheist when that is in fact what you are by definition - you can be as militant or non-militant as you like. You are an atheist by definition if you don't believe in God however militant or non-militant you are.

Hehe, I was just making a bad joke Fr0d0. Glad it had the intended effect of humor, tbh though most creationists are no less intelligent than most. They just choose to ignore evidence when it comes to specific concepts. At least in my own experience.

Certainly can be that way. - The differences between ignorance and stupidity. They often go hand in hand, but not always.
