Now, I fully expect our resident free market types to explode but frankly neither of them live here so I really don't give a fuck what either of them say.
I shouldn't have clicked on that link - cause you're right --- now I really am pissed off.
As to that final thought of yours I'll just say this: Negative opinions from foreigners about our economy means nothing to me. We've bailed the world out of crisis after crisis. Disaster after disaster ... for a century or more. Now that our own economy is failing and we have our own economic disaster looming all around us - where's our help? You think the world will come to our rescue? Fuck no. It's easy to throw stones when you live clear across the Atlantic (or Pacific).
What I'm saying is, I don't cast unwanted opinions about the absurdities in their respective countries, and I expect the same courtesy.
It's a message board, after all, and people are free to post their opinions. However, having an opinion does not mean you know how things work in foreign countries. I, for one, would never post a recipe for scones.

A valid point Min. I guess I should feel a little more free to share how I feel about archaic monarchies and the strained relationship they have with neighboring island countries. Except that, hmmm, the information I have is at best, partial, and most likely biased, and of course, there is always the fact that ... I don't LIVE there and could never understand the dynamic of living in someone else's country.

Odd. I didn't know NASA named expensive pieces of equipment after Rock songwriters

**sarcasm directed at generalized third parties**
Of course other countries don't know how the US works, but it seems the american rating agencies do know enough to rate other countries debt as 'trash', not by any objective or scientific criteria, but because they feel the said country wont be able to honor the debt. And although all the European countries expressed their outrage about those vile actions, the US government said... nothing. I understand, I too am not troubled by the others ordeals
And you still wonder wy it is easy for some people to dislike the US. Don't get me wrong, I'm not in the bandwagon of "lets badmouth the Americans", as it is clearly a sweeping generalization. Anyway, it saddens me these news about the James Webb telescope.
As for the thoughts of foreigners regarding America not being appreciated, that's a bit more complicated.
It can't be helped really, America is always in our news, via TV we spend large chunks of our formative years in the company of US families.
What the US does effects us financially, politically and culturally.
I think Americans, or any people would be OK with a foreigner's view if they agree. Most of the time I don't bother arguing with things in general, it doesn't change anything. Mostly I post in Atheist forums and people tend towards the left, I was surprised once that a guy who used a George W avatar actually liked George, I suppose some one had to.
I thought Monica and Bill shouldn't have been news, Afghanistan was a maybe Iran wasn't, health care isn't a red plot, some regulation of markets is necessary because greedy people are drawn to them, I'm glad we don't have a gun culture, the bible belt astounds me. We love you and hate you, you can be scary and give security, it's not a simple thing but I do wish ya's well. If I annoy some one on the opposite side of politics, I think it makes more sense they resent me based on the politics, not nationality.

I'm not surprised. The cost went from an initial estimate of $1.6bn (£996m) to more than $6.5bn (£4bn).
How the hell you do spend a billion let alone four on anything? Those must be some really f***ing expensive paperclips Nasa needs.
Telescopes are costly to manufacture. The lenses in particular. Orbital telescopes...even more so.

I find it easy to spend four billion on myself. Gold is very malleable metal, ideal for making the superior, unbreakable paperclips that I need.

Meet
The USS Ronald Reagan.
Quote:The contract to build Reagan was awarded to Northrop Grumman Newport News and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia on 8 December 1994, and her keel was laid down on 12 February 1998. The budget for the ship had to be increased several times and ultimately $4.5 billion was spent on her construction
