No it hasn't. It got irritated after you dug in your heels in the face of the knowledge other people have gathered, but it's not been hostile.

Er, like Shell said, Void upped you for it, and I think Darwinian even said he liked something about it.

(August 7, 2011 at 8:27 pm)Hannah Wrote: Is there anything we can do to help with your research?'

I'm not being funny here - I'm not going to dredge through your thread - did you actually ASK for help? I don't know how old you are, but I bet it's old enough to realize that people aren't going to offer you anything. You need to ask for help when you need it or advice when you want it.

(August 7, 2011 at 8:27 pm)Hannah Wrote: It's sad that not one person has shown any enthusiam for anything I've found out.

It's your job to make a more compelling argument to arouse our enthusiasm, not for us to have a push-button response to ANYTHING people post. Its one thing for me to post something about plants and people shrug because they don't give a shit, but you have plenty of history buffs on this forum who cared enough to say "Yes, but..." because they are passionate about historical accuracy. You also have plenty of people passionate about religion and philosophy on this forum and haven't engaged their minds either. It's not because they're being dicks or have no room for your interests, it's because whatever you're presenting has already been run by them. And instead of taking advantage of what they said and presented in return (weren't you just complaining about help?) you just natter on about how no one likes your hypothesis. Most of us here deeply care about the scientific method applying to as much of life as we can. We try not to "like" one hypothesis or another because we're interested in what IS, not what we care to imagine it being.

Which, if I might interject a little humor, reminds me of a great quote from Void from several months back:

theVoid Wrote:Imagine a frog with 16 legs and a massive vagina on its forehead. Who gives a shit what we can imagine. What matters is what actually exists.

Actually, that's why most of us are here, if you think about it. We want to live in the real world, not some religion's view of life and the universe.

(August 7, 2011 at 8:27 pm)Hannah Wrote: You're saying I refuse to listen to everyone else's opinions but how many of you have been remotely interested in mine? This thread was not about everyone else's theories.

The things presented to you were not OUR theories either. They were explanations provided by men and women who did hours of tedious research and archaeology to come up with hypotheses that survived the same process you're now undergoing, but on a massive international scale. Imagine if instead of being on this corner of the internet, nice as it is, you had to deal with scholars of several persuasions saying your idea is shite.

(August 7, 2011 at 8:27 pm)Hannah Wrote: You've all mocked me and I don't believe any of you have wanted me to find anything to back up my theory. And that is very very sad.

We want THE truth, not your version of the truth. Actually, we want FACTS, which are not owned by anyone or anything.

None of us are on this board to hold any of the others down. The vast majority of us joined because we wanted to be part of a community that could bolster us as far as atheism went, and we have separate sub-forums in which we can discuss, debate, and mull over just about anything we want, and when we participate in those subforums it is always with a positive goal. There is absolutely nothing gained by withholding information that might help our cause when it comes to religion, so if you find that the information we're giving you is not quite what you want, it might behoove you to rethink your own ideas rather than accuse us of being deliberately evasive. Also, any of the information we've found could easily be found by you as well, so accusing us of not wanting you to find anything to back yourself up is not only false but ludicrous. What control could we possibly have over your research?

What is sad is your idea that you could march right into a community of people who were (correct me if I'm wrong please) complete strangers to you and assume that 1) they're going to fall all over themselves running out the red carpet to knowledge that you've already pre-supposed and 2) not question a single thing you said. We don't know you, you've given us no qualifications for why we should listen to anything you say, and within one thread you've mocked others who DO have a history here and elsewhere on the net for having the sort of knowledge you need.

If I walk up to Rhythm and say "Hey dude, here's what I think about what I'm going to do with my tomatoes next year, and I think they're going to grow just damn-fucking-spectacular," and he says, "No, Summer, I've looked into that and played around with it, and I can tell you right now it's not going to work," that is not him being "mean" to me just because I had an idea and it was different from the way he does things so he wants to make sure I don't succeed. That's him already having been through a process and imparting knowledge onto me to save me time and effort. That's all these good people have been doing to you. Saving you time and effort. What about that plea for help you made earlier?

To continue, if I still disagreed with him, I would have to explain to him why I thought my idea was any different from what he already tried and either A) go about my business myself and bring back some damn-fucking-spectacular tomatoes to convince him, or B) further convince him why he should help me carry this idea out and what would be in it for him. This is the course you should have taken with all of the religion and history buffs, if you wanted help.

hmmm

A lot of CAPS going on in this thread. You may want to refer to your handy forum guidebook before one of our friendly moderators hands one to you.

Still, a readable thread.

Maybe, I can help put the treatment she has received into context for Hannah, and since I have nothing invested in this thread, hopefully what I say will be taken as a purely third-person perspective on this.

Hannah, you have not been around enough to know this but Min. here is the first person that will tell you an idea is ridiculous. The fact that he only told you your idea was stupid on the thirty-sixth page and after so many rebuttals is still in his 'polite phase'(he wasn't kidding about that) means that your idea was not unjustly criticized right off the bat. Personally, I see that you were treated fairly and you are coming off in this debate as frustrated and upset that your hypothesis was not accepted.

Don't take anything I've said personally or as some sort of insult as I do not mean any of this to be hurtful. Just remember that putting forward a hypothesis such as this one means dealing with criticism whether it's true or not.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
