Humanists/Naturalists: What gives your life meaning?

RE: Humanists/Naturalists: What gives your life meaning?
Wow on you getting your Master Scuba Certification! How awesome! I'm certified in Scuba diving and did my check out dives down in Belize which was awesome... huge coral reefs! Though last time I tried to dive in St. Maarten, I had a little panic attack and couldn't do it. Sad I also have this huge fear of drowning so hopefully next time, I'll be able to dive.

I have never bought into the idea that you even need a meaning to your life. Just try to be the best person you can to those around you (if they are worthy of that, tell the others to fuck off and leave you alone) and be happy and content with what you have each day. I mean, it's good to contribute something to society versus being a drain on it but really, to me, it's just about being satisfied.

I know a lot of people who have what I'd consider meaningless lives, but never hear anyone asking them where they get meaning in life.
Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.

Food, glorious food!
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

To pursue knowledge and understanding, to experience as much as I can, to love and care for others, to do what I want to do and be who I want to be, because as far as I know, this existence is all I have or will ever have. Might as well use this one chance of life and live it well. Also because it's the only life/existence you'll ever have, you better be damn careful on how you spend it.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

One thing I've always wondered is why people think their life has to have meaning. I just don't understand this. I've never felt the need for that sort of thing.

Hey, welcome to the forums AA, don't think we've exchanged words yet.

I'm the OP. Life doesn't have to have a meaning. To clarify, I'm an existentialist. I don't believe that life has any meaning, in and of itself. Life has whatever meaning that we as individuals personally find in it or create for ourselves.

The point of the original post was to lay waste to a common theist claim that as without god-belief, life has no meaning. That, and I thought it would be interesting to find out what others here find meaningful.

RE: Enter the ABSURD ... What gives your life yea... whatever?
I'm alive- that's enough for me. I don't feel the need to give my life meaning. There are things I live for, if that's what you mean. Family, my art, and my sport, mostly.
That will never hold up in court...

Heh heh, yes I can tell you were the original poster, I do understand how forums in general work.

I understand that life only has whatever meaning individuals find in it, but I never even found the need to find meaning in my life personally. I was just wondering if anybody else felt that way too.

Exactly. I feel exactly the same way. And even though I have things I live for, I've never felt that I NEED things to live for.
