Question to those who,

That was how my (ex-)wife and I raised out (now adult) son. If they are old enough to frame a question, they are old enough to deserve an honest answer.

With one caveat. Our So. Baptist babysitter was aghast at hearing of our Wiccan faith. (I am no longer, and I don't care anymore about our ex-.) She did not like we told -the truth- about our son's questions on things like the Bible. She called Child Services.

The State of Florida seized our child from the babysitter's while my wife and I were out. They accused my ex-wife of sexual assault on our son. It took nine months of battling with the state before they would release him back to us.

In the meantime, he had suffered physical assault from several of the foster caregivers while in State custody. After our lawyer obtained a nine-hour video tape of the interrogation of our six-year-old son by DFS officials, including no breaks for bathroom, food, or water, we were forced to file a Constitutional suit against DFS alleging unlawful imprisonment of our son in violation of his Fourth Amendment rights, and denying my wife the opportunity to face her accusers and seek redress against the government in open court.

There are times when "standing up for the truth" means you may pay the consequences for that truth as well. While my ex- is not Galileo, she can be added to that long list of martyrs for the truth that includes him.

James.

RE: Question to those who,
Wow. Just wow. My heart goes out to you, my friend. I simply cannot believe that such things can happen in your country based on nothing more than a babysitter getting pissed off because you don't believe in god.

I fucking dislike theists more and more every day.

Shocked and angered after reading your story.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

I have also had someone call child services on me. They said I was "worshipin' Satan".

RE: Question to those who,
This shit annoys me. Many xtians do equate non belief in god with worshipping the devil, because they cannot comprehend non belief, the atheist must believe in something, right?. Nope.

Sorry to hear of your problems too!

This crap would never happen in Britain.

RE: Question to those who,
Well I would first like to say thank you for all the suggestions. I also wanna say wow and sorry for the problems in Florida. I can't believe there are people that would screw with your family because you don't have the same views in America.

I guess it really wasn't a question of how but if I should start talking to her. Maybe how. The big problem for me is I really don't want to take her childhood and imagination away before she is ready. I kinda feel that if I get serious about what's real and what's fake then she will start to question things like Santa, the Easter bunny and so on. I do realize that those are based on religious holidays but for me and my children they are no better than hallmark holidays. We do celebrate those holidays in my house for one because of tradition and I wasn't always an atheist. We also continue because of my kids.

I'm not sure if my daughter really still believes in the tooth fairy but I don't want to tell her, I want her to come to her own conclusions about those types of things.

This is more or less my dilemma. Am I deluded? Lol

I don't think so,I think you seem very sane.

I've never really heard of religious freaks in Britain doing stuff like that. Certainly British christians seem a lot more reserved than the USA fundies. I stand to be corrected of course.

I believe you've never heard of such a thing. So what? The US has no monopoly on fuckwits or pig ignorant religious aresholes.

Willing to bet that like Australia, the UK has its fair share every bit as bad..Eg you have that hateful Pat Condell and that appalling Whitecombe woman, for a kick off.

RE: Question to those who,
Pat Condell is an atheist so he's hardly likely to report somebody to child services because they don't believe in god, padraic.

Oh I'm not saying we don't have our fair share of basketcases, but we tend to keep them in church, and have a secular type of society.

RE: Question to those who,
Honestly if you teach your kid to question everything, it's nigh impossible they will fall into the religious trap without some serious brainwashing. I have some little cousins who are devout preteen now, their indoctrination began before they were walking. And holy shit anymouse, that is monstrous. I am speechless.
"In our youth, we lacked the maturity, the decency to create gods better than ourselves so that we might have something to aspire to. Instead we are left with a host of deities who were violent, narcissistic, vengeful bullies who reflected our own values. Our gods could have been anything we could imagine, and all we were capable of manifesting were gods who shared the worst of our natures."-Me

"Atheism leaves a man to sense, to philosophy, to natural piety, to laws, to reputation; all of which may be guides to an outward moral virtue, even if religion vanished; but religious superstition dismounts all these and erects an absolute monarchy in the minds of men." – Francis Bacon
