Roman Catholic.

I was brought up working-class-bog-Irish-Catholic. Arguably the most superstitious, pig ignorant, bigoted and hateful form of a pernicious faith.

The child sex abuse scandal and the Church's arrogant and self serving reactions have not really surprised me, merely reinforced my opinion of the Catholic Church and its leaders.

I was thinking that I was a muslim and those extermists were misunderstanding islam. But, as I read the quran properly I saw that my own principles has nothing to do with islam. It was me who misunderstood islam. Then, I became a follower of the Eru Illuvatar. Tongue

In theory I was a protestant because my mum is and she cared about religion more than my dad who was in theory a catholic( I recently found out that he now classes himself as an atheists) did.
In practice it didnt 'take' I remember going to sunday school, they started reading genesis to us and I some asked questions about the more obvious errors who did cane marry, why is woman created twice in different ways that kind of thing, basically being a pain in the arse smart aleck, a tradition I contioue to this day. I never went back. I have a vague recollection that they asked my mum not to take me again but that was a long time ago and memory plays tricks so I cant be 100% certain of that.

Went to a church of England primary school, was Christened so I guess I was a Christian, however prior to that I was an Atheist and stand by EVERYONE being born an Atheist. My mum wasn't religious at all, in fact she hates organised religion as much as I do, although she does believe there is "something" it was just the best local school to send me to and fairly light on the religious side of things.

So yea, a Christian-light upbringing I guess, with fairly regular trips to church via the school...but I never really bought into that shit and was fairly lucky to escape having it pushed down my throat like in many religious schools.

I was always a bad Jew - I never saw the point of praying or anything like that since the best I could come up with was a deistic notion of god. I think I mentioned on your intro thread that I toyed around with the idea of Wicca but (and the following is no disrespect to other Wiccans - I lived in a bumfuck town) the few outwardly Wiccan kids at my school were all mouth-breathers and not people I wanted to be associated with. I love learning about folklore and mythology and symbolism, but eventually I realized I just didn't give a good goddamn past that. My rosebushes are more interesting. I was bat mitzvahed in a conservative temple, confirmed in a reform temple, spent a few years hiding my discontent and disinterest thanks to an overly Baptist boyfriend, and two years ago I met two fantastic atheists, one of who inadvertently led me to Shell and here, and...suddenly it was like someone took a vice off from around my chest.

I was a Lutheran, Missourah Synod, until I realised how idiotic it was, starting with John 3:16: God Sacrificed himself to himself to change a rule he made himself.
