NDT on Trump's "Space Force"

I think NDT makes some pretty solid points here, especially concerning people's dismissal of an idea simply because it was proposed by Trump or his Administration. Tyson actually hashes out some decent idea as to why a "Space Force" would be necessary and why we shouldn't dismiss it as a silly idea, simply because it's coming from a silly man with orange hair.
What do you guys think?

Seriously, since the militarization of space is a fact of life, it does make a certain kind of sense for space-faring countries to protect those assests.

Right, and much like the Air Force once broke off from the Army, we could make a Space Force from the current Air Force, as Tyson suggests.

My understanding is that the plan is to make the Space Force to the Air Force what the Marines are to the Navy. I was in Air Force Space Command a long time ago. We were already quite a bit different from the rest of the Air Force then. We had a culture that was different from the rest of the air force. Our operational uniforms (blue fatigues with a Space Command ascot) were distinct from the uniforms worn by the rest of the air force. So the Space Force sounds basically like a logical continuation of something that has been happening for long time.

How ever they do it there needs to be a core group that knows you can't just drive a space vehicle over to another one like you would on Earth. The specialists are going to need to be literally rocket scientists.

Yeah, they actually introduced us to that with an entertaining little cartoon about orbital mechanics where one guy was chasing another guy in earth orbit. That was day one of training, as I recall.

There are rocket scientists who can design workable rockets and space craft, and then there are “rocket scientists” who can be taught the concepts of how orbital mechanics work and able to use and make sense of the software that does the actual math.
The former is comparable to designers of modern aircraft, warships and even tanks. They are generally in the industry and not in the military. The latter anyone with a 4 year engineering or natural science degree can do, and a good few bright kids who haven’t been through college can also be taught to do.
In practice the personnel of a “space force” need not come close in intelligence and education normally ascribed to spacey things like NASA or ESA. The elite specialists actually in such a force would be bachelors and a few masters. No PhDs required.

I think Neil is missing the point that the "Space Force" the orange turd wants isn't anything pragmatic but a vanity project. And it is nothing more to Trump to justify another arms race to make the global weapons industry richer.
We don't need a space force. We need better funding for NASA and our already existing intel agencies.
Trump stupidly pictures a "Space Force" like storm troopers in Star Wars.
