teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

^This puts me in mind of religious nutters in Massachusetts blaming lightning rods for a 1755 earthquake. The ‘reasoning’ was that Franklin’s invention was diverting God’s wrath from the sky to the ground and avoiding Divine punishment. As time went on and it became more and more apparent that church steeples with lightning rods suffered a lot less damage than churches that lacked them, the objection withered away.
The godists can bitch all they want, but practicality always wins. Boru
