Agriculture, Climate Change and Carbon Sequestration

Agriculture, Climate Change and Carbon Sequestration
I came across a wonderful little pdf for those interested at one of my favorite sites. ATTRA. The PDF is free, most of it drawn from a paper released by the US Dept of Ag back in '08 (Backlund et all, 2008). It touches on a couple of topics that cropped up in a few threads recently and so I figured it might be worth a read. Things like the pros and cons of climate change (from an ag perspective), greenhouse gas emissions by activity, proposed carbon taxes and cap and trade systems, and it is chock full of interesting little bits of tedium. It also has plenty of colorful pictures and graphs, which is important to their target market (heheheh). Its a bit dated, couple years have passed, but a wonderful read nevertheless (imho).

Enjoy.

Carbon sequestration? Do they mean, carbon capture techniques?

The planet's already doing just that...

So what, it is very likely not doing it nearly fast enough for our purposes.i

Yeah, absolutely is doing that Welsh, not just in big fantastic ways, but tiny nearly imperceptible ways that add up to a whole hell of a lot. Ag contributes to that(generally). However, apparently due largely to soil management techniques ag (specifically) releases more carbon (and a host of other things as well) than it captures. Therein lies the rub, many things we do both capture and release carbon. It matters very little whether or not any given amount of carbon is captured when the amount released is greater. I've been looking into the various conservation tillage proposals that were linked for a long while. I'm thinking of trying them out next year (or, in a perfect world, getting someone to pay me to try them out on their fields...lol. It's always a good idea to play with someone else's money).
