Evidence of complex microbial ecosystems dating back almost 3.5 billion years has been found in a sedimentary rock sequence in Western Australia's Pilbara region - extending the geological record of these structures by almost 300 million years. These types of ecosystems are one of the 'signs of life' rovers are searching for on Mars.
