Unfortunately he doesn't care for the fact that I have five cities now, despite the fact that I'm not expanding near him. I'm staying on my side of the mountain range.

I have not yet been betrayed by someone I had a defensive pact with, for what it's worth.

I don't think they can betray you when a defensive pact is in play, same as when a peace treaty is in force. A declaration of friendship? Watch your back, lest you find a dagger in it.

I kind of wish we could put our cities four spaces apart instead of five, because on this map I can't put the cities exactly where I want them along the river and mountain line. A minimum of three would be understandable, so the eight hexes around a city would undeniably belong to that city, but I'm not sure where five comes from.

Not that I want to scrunch my empire together as much as possible, but sometimes it would help. Mostly along natural borders.

Yeah that can be frustrating - but you really want to space out your cities. You'll seriously hinder growth late in the game if you don't. Even 5 tiles apart is really closer than you want them.

I'm not sure if shared hexes benefit multiple cities, but if not I can understand if center cities lose out because of outer cities. Too close together and they won't get enough territory to prosper. too far apart, and they're harder to defend.

Shared hexes only benefit one city. In addition, your city boundary can be larger than you might think, they can certainly be bigger than 3 tiles out (the limit where you can buy tiles).

IMHO, your best defense is a strong offense. I try to not let an invading force set foot on my land. It's easier to do on island maps of course.

RE: Civ 5
On my Earth map I built the great wall in Rome, which was in the middle of the continent. over time I watched that wall radius get bigger and bigger. That's probably the bet way to see how far a border can really expand. Though I'm not really sure if there's anything we can do about that. You can't just have all your cities be a mile out from each other.

I'm getting annoyed by my neighbors sending armies to my borders. Rome had some small attack force that crashed impotently against the forts on the hills that act as openings in the mountain pass. Swordsmen vs riflemen on hill forts. No surprise who won, and he wanted peace after that little attack. Germany tried harder. Now France has rolled up some musketeers on my southern border, and I'm watching them carefully.

I guess it's fortunate that on this map I'm Japan, and am geared for military. I'm not overly concerned yet.

I don't think anyone answer my question about the map seeds. Is it possible to find them, so I can save the seed numbers outside the game?

RE: Civ 5
Btw, are we discussing vanilla Civ 5, or is it with expansions G&K or BNW?

For future reference it would be good to either include this in thread title or state it in the OP, since some of the game mechanics differ between the versions.

As for map seeds, there is a "save map" option. It's under Menu-Save game-Save map.

Civ 5 is one of if not my favourite game of all time.

Anybody else ridiculously super pumped for "Civ: Beyond Earth" coming out this year?

I didn't know that expansions would differ the gameplay that much, I'm only using the vanilla version. In fact, I didn't even plan on buying the game or playing it, but a friend of mine gifted it to me on Steam, so I thought, why the fuck not. Are there any expansions you recommend, or any DLC for that matter?

What about mods too?

Also, with the Earth map, is it actually exactly like Earth, or is it quite a bit different to what the actual layout of continents is like on Earth? Does it also affect where your civ starts? Like for instance France starts in a 'european' continent while if you have another civ like the Aztecs they'd start on the other side of the world?

These questions are for everyone Tongue
