Hello all

I'm new here and have been an atheist for a few years now but I was raised as a Buddhist. Just wanted to join a forum of like minded people.

Welcome.

Are Buddhists truly as easy going as I've been told?

They are, but they still cling onto dogma and unproven beliefs (eg karma and reaching nirvana through enlightenment).

If you press them with socratic questions on their beliefs, they will end up giving you the same replies as all other religions (pascals wager comes to mind).

Welcome aboard.  What led you to preferring socratic reasoning over direct insight? Which variant of buddhism, btw?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

What is direct insight and how is it used?

Let me elaborate further on how I use socratic reasoning...I assess if something is logical (socratic reasoning), and if it is, I then assess if it is founded in reality (eg facts / evidence to prove it).

You can make a logical argument on anything but if it is not based in reality then it is just a fantasy.

My parents adhere to the Theravada school of Buddhism which just means they are literalists on Buddha's teachings.

"Direct insight" is a way of characterizing the difference between a process of analytical reasoning (ie: socratic reasoning, as one example)..and reading buddhists scriptures, thinking about them, and deciding that they seem true based upon you own quasi or semi systematic "insight". The notion that you (or elders/preists, more likely in theraveda) have "direct access to insight". No system required, just contemplation of concepts themselves.

Theraveda, huh. SE Asian?

Ah...thanks for the explanation.

I think Direct Insight can lead to incorrect conclusions as a conclusion on should only be formulated based on the fact / evidence on hand. My opinion is that Direct Insight is an ineffective way to approach decisions in life.

Yeah, SE Asian...Burma (Myanmar) actually Smile
