I wonder what concession he extracted for retiring from Syria. Most likely western acquiescence of Assad's continued tenure as president of Syria and the counterparty in any peace talks. I don't think a mainly air campaign of moderate scale would be too expensive even for Russia to sustain.
Remember the American position had been that Assad had to go before any peace negotiation, i.e. Syrian life is a small price to pay for getting rid of a regime that had been friendly to the US but not friendly enough to be a willing pawn in a geostrategic game to checkmate Russia.
