The fact is that politically speaking, America is suffering through a period of evacuated middle-ground; there's a no-man's land between the extremes on each end of the spectrum

There's only one extreme in US politics at the moment, the far-right. The Republicans are currently a far-right party operating at a level not to far off the Nazi party c. 1936 (aside from the anti-semitism). The Democrats are, in modern terms, a centre-right party, but given the centre has been dragged to the far right over the last thirty years, in proper terms they are hard-right. Yes, you've got sections of the Democrat party which could properly be termed social democrat, but social democracy was never, nor can never be legitimately, termed a hard left grouping. The enviornmentalist and shoppers rights Green party, and the ideologically incoherent Libertarians are too small to matter, even at a localised level.

So at the moment in US politics you've got the far right opposed by the hard right. And, frankly that is virtually no choice at all.
