It's not that simple Khemikal, this topic is of the finest detail topics, not to argue with Christians and Jews, but rather, to show Muslims must not do the same mistake where they break up to sects and rely on their clergy for authority pertaining to the religion.
The question if Islam was the true religion in all times, how come it was not correctly passed over by Christians and Jews, is a good topic in itself, but better then proving to Christians and Jews, is to clarify to Muslims their path way forward.
Even on a word that unites people of the book with Muslims, it says, that we should worship God sincerely and not take some of us as lords over others. We agree on this in theory, in practice, it doesn't happen. But if we emphasize on this, everything will become easy. We will realize a lot of us do follow and incline to idols.
Rather then relying on humans for guidance, we are to rely on God the sufficient for guidance. So they must rather hold on to to rope of God, and seek knowledge from the family of the reminder and adhere to and obey those who truly hold the authority from them.
